Hi guys. I need to know if this system is capable of running Windows Vista 64-bit. Here are my pc specs:

Network Gaming Card: K1 Killer NIC Card
Sound Card: Integrated Hi-Def Audio, Nvidia C55-MB
Video Cards: Dual Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB, SLI-Enabled
Physics Card: Ageia Physx PCI-Expresse X1
Processor: Pentium 4 Dual-Core 2.7GHz HSF Z9H741K011
RAM: 4GB DDR2 Low Latency PC-6400 AW108
Hard Drive: 1TB Seagate SATA 3G 7200RPM 16 MB Cache NCQ
Monitor: 22" Samsung 1680 X 1050 (2MS) 226BW
Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit Home Edition

I was told that the processor determines whether or not you can run it so I looked under my system properties and this is what is listed next to processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 2.67GHz.

If you could also let me know how you can tell if your system can run 64-bit I would really appreciate it as I'm trying to become more computer-savy. Thanks!

That's what I'm trying to find out. I have no idea how to tell, and I was hoping someone here would be able to explain to me how I can tell.

Is your processor "Pentium 4 Dual-Core 2.7GHz HSF Z9H741K011" or "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 2.67GHz"? If it's the second, you can run 64 bit OSes, but not on the first one. You just look on the internet, find your model number on the manufacturer's website or wikipedia etc, and if it says 64 bit supported, or anything 64 bit related, 64 bit OSes should run on it. It should also say on the CPU box you got it in.

This is exactly what it says next to processor under system properties:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 2.67GHz.

So I'm assuming that's the second one? Thanks for explaining that to me, I'll try to look into that more now.

I'm pretty sure that your processor cannot run a 64bit OS.

Yeah it's the second one. Have fun with 64 bit Vista! Btw, where did you get the Pentium 4 Dual Core info anyway?

That CPU CAN run a 64bit OC

Ohhh....now I see where the confusion is coming from. I looked at my order invoice online and that listed the Pentium 4 processor. I looked directly on my computer and got the info for the other processor. I'm confused now. I'll have to contact alienware to find out why those are different, but I would assume that the one listed on my PC is the one actually installed right?

Well that's weird... the one in system properties is the one your PC has installed. I wouldn't contact them, I don't know how it works, but if it was MEANT to be a Pentium Dual Core then they may ask you to replace it, send it in or whatever. Btw, f-a-d-3, your username isn't a blink 182 reference, is it?

Is the one that's currently installed better than the Pentium 4? If so, would you mind explaining why?

The one that is actually installed is better. It's WAY faster, and it has 4 cores vs a Pentium 4 that has 2 cores. It says Pentium 4 Dual Core in the first post... I'll assume that means the Pentium D which is basically 2 Pentium 4s mashed together. As if the P4s didn't already have high heat and power consumption, intel took 2 and put them in 1. Keep the Q6700. It's 10x better. Seriously.

The correction was 1 core, on the first line of my previous post. Where I said "The one that is actually installed is better. It's WAY faster, and it has 4 cores vs a Pentium 4 that has 2 cores." It's cos the specs alienware gave you are confusing, a Pentium 4 Dual Core? It's either a Pentium 4, a Pentium D or a Pentium Dual Core. They're different, all 3. But never mind that, your current CPU is way better than what alienware promised you, and for that, I wouldn't contact them about it in case you're forced to return it. Somehow. Not sure how it works.

Gotcha. I will double check my processor when I get home from work and have access to it. Hopefully it's the Intel cause my 4 gigs of RAM are kinda useless right now. I'll post from home when I'm out of work to let you know for sure.

Ok so I'm back home and this is what it says next to Processor under system properties:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz 2.67GHz

So, based on my other hardware, do you guys think it would be a good idea to upgrade to 64-bit?

Home Premium, has Aero interface, Media Center, some other stuff I can't remember, it's the most well rounded of the versions, and is reasonably priced.

Well I got 64-bit and so far its running much better than the 32-bit was. It's been more stable and having it take advantage of all my memory is really nice.
