I'm looking to upgrade my system to an i7. I will be using 6gb of DDR3 RAM, so I decided to (unfortunately) go with Vista 64. I was planning on using my HD from my current system in the new PC. So, can I install Vista on my current drive, or will I have to install on a brand new drive? My current HD is 500gb, partitioned C - G drives, with C: being used only for windows and system files, and all the drives are NTFS. If I **** C: drive, will Vista install, or will there be conflicts?

Vista 64 is a great OS, you can install Vista on your old HDD, during the installation it'll show you both partitions, just say which partition you want to install to, it'll take care of the rest and leave the other partitions alone.

I agree vista 64 is a great OS very stable and fast, you'll love it with 6gb ram, it'll fly.

few programs you might want to try out after installing everything:

jkdefrag

ccleaner

superantispyware

windows ultimate tweaker

-google them programs

Vista 64 is a good OS. That said I did have it self-corrupt on me a few weeks ago and I only just got it repaired (took me three weeks because my laptop just had to die at the start of hell week at college. You know, the period right before finals where every class you have has either an exam, a paper/project due, or both).

So speaking from experience here: I have two HDDs in my laptop right now. The new one I bought (I was going to get a bigger HDD eventually, the OS problem just forced me to stop procrastinating) and the old one. I tried running my games and programs off the old HDD after I fixed the corrupted partition with chkdsk but I've found that I have to move them to the new HDD to run. It's not terribly surprising since games and programs typically need to write some registry values and do other things to the OS before they can run. As a result while you shouldn't expect any conflicts with what you're planning to do, you should expect to have to reinstall everything anyway.

Make sure you reformat during install. I've dual-boot (vista64 & XP pro32) and find i lose 5-10 fps on any given game compared to XP. However, nearly every game appears that bit better on vista64 than Xp even when both @ dx9. If you plan dual-booting, I suggest keeping OSs on physically seperate drives (disable 1 while installing on other). Good luck!
