you can learn to play it (edit: without knowing the rules, oops :D), but you WILL learn the 2e d&d rules in the process.. which honestly are kind of bonkers. you don't need to know the rules to know how to play, but you will learn them to understand how many attacks your fighters get, how hard your tank is to hit, and how many spells your mage can learn in a day.

yes you can, I never knew the rules, I only learned them by playing the game just a hint: whenever I played the game this always bothered me I never knew what 1D8, 1D6, 1D10 meant, they mean 1 dice of 8, 6 and 10 in other words 1D8 means 1-8 damage

The latest D&D rules (4.0) are pretty easy to understand and get into, same for 3.0, but the old AD&D rules used in Baldur's Gate are definitely more complex and esoteric.

But don't let that scare you! Spend a few minutes with the manual, the rest will come as you play the game. You'll notice that your armor rating goes down the better armor you wear, you'll notice that your attack rating goes up the more experienced/better weapons you get. It'll click. It's really not that much different from learning any new game system. Did you have any problem with Dragon Age, or Mass effect?

About the only thing that will take you a little bit of practice to get good at are the tactical aspects (who do I attack the mage with, the fighter, the rogue, etc), and the magic system. There are a lot of spells to choose from, and not all of them are easy to figure out in terms of how to get the most out of them.

But that's just part of the fun, IMHO. Finding out new tricks, new tactics, etc.

i didnt even know what D&D was when i got the games. i got by fine. heres just a few gotchyas just in case though in BG1 (i think it was changed in BG2) the lower your armor score the better. so armor of -6 is much better than 6. i remember buying studded leather for my character and seeing the score go down and i was a bit deflated. but then i thought "studded leather is better than no armor so a lower score must be better". as mentioned you will see things like "1d8" or "2d6". that just means 1 8 sided dice or 2 6 sided dice. besides that you can pretty much ignore it and get on with the game. the game is pretty descriptive regarding what spells do and such like and its pretty self explanatory.
