Hey guys I plan on building a gaming pc by the middle or the endof the summer hopefully a few months ago when I was on gametrailers I remember someone was saying that you couldn't play old pc games on vista and I got a little worried but I haven't thought about asking people that actually have experience with it until now so will vista play games as old as 2000?

Compatibility is hit or miss, your better off sticking with XP until Windows 7.

Just get Vista 64-bit, It's compatible with almost everything. (I've NEVER run into a compatibility issue with it, it's been GREAT.)

With 32bit Vista, I've gotten problems with a bunch of early 2000 games, just look around to see if what you want to play is stable.

This is before game development even thought of 64bit, how does that make it better? A bunch of programs today don't even run on 64bit properly.

I'd check online if there are specific games you're concerned about. Vista does have more issues than XP, although there are older games that have problems with both operating systems. One alternative is just to download the release candidate of Windows 7, as it seems quite stable and I haven't had as many problems with older games as I did with Vista (32bit version, although I don't see how the 64bit version would fix anything).

Halo 2 is "new" and yes. Windows 7 is their next major release of Windows and much better then both Vista and XP.

Ive had no problems with any games and about the programs not working on 64bit, you just have to download the right version :P If it doesnt have a 64bit version, find a different program thats the same. Its not that hard.

plus if you wanna get really technical you can run windows xp inside windows vista so if there actually is a game you are having issues with you can try that. Sorry, thats only if you have Ultimate or business versions of vista. pretty neat though.

I've never had any issues running older games on Vista, 32-bit or 64-bit. Honestly, I've had less compatibility issues on Vista than I had on XP.

Too bad it's useless for 3D games that use hardware acceleration, since the virtualization software doesn't support it. (Though even with VMware and VirtualBox, hardware graphics acceleration is hit-or-miss.) Anyway, while I've had some compatibility issues on my Vista/7 box (see sig), I have a feeling that the problems I get (at least in Crimson Skies, Heavy Gear II and Falcon 4.0 Open Falcon/FreeFalcon5) are NVIDIA's fault; Vista/7 appear to run the games themselves okay, but NVIDIA refuses to fix such old games in their drivers. ATI is even worse, or at least they were when I tested an HD 4850 with Catalyst 8.10 before shipping it off to its intended owner. About the only game that I know Vista/7 broke for sure is MechWarrior 2, and even that game was broken in 2000 and XP for a while until someone traced the issue to some .DLL files. I usually have more compatibility issues with drivers than games as a result of the OS itself; nobody's updated PPJoy (for virtual joystick support), HIDSPORB (Spacetec SpaceOrb 360 driver for 2000/XP), or VTCHID (Steel Battalion controller driver) for 64-bit Vista/7.

To be exact, Windows 7 "Professional" has XP mode. And it is virtual PC kind, so don't get you hopes up on gaming. Even if it runs, it is not as fast since it is a virtual PC/ hyperV kind of virtualization.

and windows 7 ultimate, which is the one that is for free beta right now

Any game that already runs on XP should in most cases have no problems with Vista. These games aren't that old in the grand scheme of things. Any games that are currently on Steam (i.e. Half-life, CS, CS Source, etc) are absolutely fine. Halo for sure. Rainbow Six, Swat and Splinter Cell I've run in Vista without issue. The Unreals -could- have issues but again I think it's doubtful. -Byshop

trying to remember if I ever bumped into a game that WOULDnt run on Vista (I also has the 64 bit)

well... diablo 1, fallout 1, bg2 and iwd 1had to be in compatability mode, which is no biggie.

Ah wait... Carmageddon 1 diddnt run all too well (it ran but crashed often) Other then that I can play anything from Duke Nukem 3d and X-Com Defence, up to the games out now, without a hitch.

Must admit that my games library is only about 60 games ( which is fairly small compared to alot of people here) but I never really have to consider if old games wont run.
