After reading a debate that got me thinking about peoples vision and whether they could actually see the difference between TN and IPS panels, and what their vision is like.

Click on your answer and then explain why you have IPS or TN.

I bought a TN panel because when I bought it IPS monitors were about 3 times what I paid for it. However I see a huge difference. At the time the difference in size of my monitors was a big enough deal that I didn't feel the need to hold out for IPS. I went from 17" lcd 1280x1024 to 23" lcd 1920x1080

This is a flawed poll. Glasses help with blurred vision, the results would be the same with or without glasses because IPS/TN have nothing to do with sharpness. The only exception is if you have more than postivie 4 or negative 4, where its so blurry that theres no reason to use a monitor because you could read anything.

IPS is definitely superior. Is it worth the cost? i think so.

Its hard to show though because theres no quantative values to compare. And the only ones that are (Delta E's of a aRGB) are nearly meaningless to most people.

I dont see much difference myself, I have 20/20 vision but I doubt it matters. I have 1920x1080 TN+Film. What is the supposed difference between the two?

My friend has an IPS panel. I'd say that the main difference is better contrast and better color reproduction. If you have a good TN panel the difference isn't as pronounced but it's still there.

I still wouldn't buy IPS yet though. He doesn't game so for him it's fine but I personally do enjoy my 2ms...

I have "perfect" eyesight btw, not that this makes much of a difference :P

I have both sitting next to each other right now and I can see the difference. When I play movies on my IPS and other people are watching (ie they aren't sitting dead in front of the monitors), they really notice the difference.

whoa..youreally made a poll.. I was actually joking back there

You are really curious, eh? :p

anyway, i stick to my opinion before that there's not really a big difference between them.. YesI do notice a little difference.. but I don't think it could justify the price tag..

You seemed to have missed yesterdays 4 page fight on this topic.

There is a difference in quality IPS being better but not enough of a difference for the price.

That's an opinion, not a fact. Obviously ones budget and how much one needs accurate color reproduction are both huge factors in determining whether the price difference is worth it.

Expensive IPS panels have a 100% NTSC/98% RGB color space, which is interesting for graphic designers who need to be able to print in true color offset (ISOcoated).

'Everyday' TN panels don't come close to those numbers.

How can you tell if your monitor is TN or IPS? I don't see it anywhere in the manual or specs...

This. There is a noticeable difference, but it isn't big enough to justify the difference in price.

Is the color the same when you look at your monitor from the side as it is when you look at it straight on. When you stand up and look down at your monitor does everything get lighter or darker? If so you have a TN monitor.

My buddy has one (IPS) and while its not like I NEED to get one after seeing it, it is clearly different and much nicer looking.

I think it's more so knowing what you're looking for - a lot of people will just get used to a given condition and not realize it can be any different.

I think a better poll would have been to ask:

IPS owner who would purchase IPS again.

IPS owner who would NOT purchase IPS again.

TN owner who is interested in purchasing IPS (currently).

TN owner who is NOT interested in purchasing IPS (currently).

i think you'll see "interesting" if not predictable results of most people taking the top and bottom. I'm not sure i've ever seen anyone with an IPS monitor say they are unhappy and would step to a TN panel. On other hand, most people havent had the pleasure of using an IPS panel and are ignorant of its benefits.

The difference is obvious along the vertical viewing axis. TN has NASTY color shifts when not viewing head-on. IPS has only a slight shift in the blacks at most along the horizontal viewing axis. You might think "And how does this negatively impact gaming?" Aside from showing games to your friends, I happen to be a TrackIR user in the titles that support it, which inherently forces me to view the monitor with off-axis viewing angles. Watching the colors shift around when moving my head would be quite an immersion killer. If I had to replace my FD Trinitrons and couldn't get any more (let alone one of those GDM-FW900s), 16:10 IPS would be the way to go for me, even though it doesn't come cheap. At least monitors tend to have longer lifespans and retain their value better than PC parts if they're good ones.

Extremely obvious. The viewing angle is SO much higher than that of a TN panel. Now is an IPS panel worth my money? No not yet, for me anyway. But it is indeed nice.

Yes. IPS panels have noticeably better contrast, and black levels(though they still aren't that great.) They also have better viewing angles and more accurate colors. When I hook my computer up to my tv(LG with an LG S-IPS panel), I immediately notice the difference from my TN monitor.

Ok... when i look at my monitor in different angles it only changes a little bit, not very noticable, but not sure if this means its an TN.

I think a poll with the one option would suffice. That option would read "GummiRaccoon most likely to buy an IPS panel"... :P
