If you want to go from Vista back to XP, you can't run XP setup in Vista.  You have to boot with the XP disk, format the drive, then proceed with XP installation.

If you ARE booting with the XP disk, and getting that error before you get to the desktop, make sure your XP disk is not scratched or dirty.

Everything I've seen says that to dual-boot XP and Vista, you have to start over with XP, get it running on one partition, then you setup Vista from within XP.  I don't think you have a choice to run XP again, unless you format.

I think you need an empty partition to install XP from vista.

Affirmative. What he wants to do (which is basically 'downgrade' from Vista to XP) is impossible.

But if he can free up a partition of stuff and completely clear it, he can reinstall to xp.

Question: are you willing to delete everything on it?

i can but i dont see how word files and videos/songs can hamper an OS installationÂ
