Hi guys, I recently bought a new HDD (Western Digital 500gb 7200rpm SATAII). It's the first time i buy another HDD for my rig, so I know little about installing HDDs.

I didn't have problems installing it, i just plugged the SATA and the power connectors, and then i formattted it. Btw i'm using Vista.

Now i can see the second SATA drive in my computer, the problem is that it seems that i can use it only for storage. I can't install games and other programs (i get different error messages such as time limit expired). Also, sometimes it takes a lot of time to move stuff from the older hdd to the new one (the old one is a WD 250gb SATA).

What can i do? Do i need to make partitions or install the OS in the new drive or something?

I'd really appreciate any help.

so you went into admin tool and disk management and created a new partition? It appears in my computer? if so when installing a program you should just have to select advanced setup or custom is something like that depending on the app and where it says install location change it to your new drive

I can't think of any reason why you could copy data to a drive, but not install programs to it... if your getting error messages it could be a phsyical problem with the drive.

No, in disk management I only formatted the new HDD, I didn't create any partition.

I've tried to do what you said, but still can't install games. During installation the progress bar suddenly stops and after a couple of minutes i get an error message, it's weird because the error it's not the same in every game, for exampe, in Red Alert i get an error that ask me to make sure that V00AS or something is correct (it's a file from the game, but i don't see any problem with it), and with Dead Space i get a time limit expired error.

About the 2nd answer, You are right, i thought that i only needed to connect the new HDD and format it, i don't know if i did something wrong. It's like if the new drive were working as a USB device or something.

Maybe programs need to be on the same partition as Windows :? They write to the registry so i'm guessing they can't be on a separate partition.

Yup, that's what i was thinking. But if it's true and games need to be in the same partition as the OS, is there something i can do? I don't have enough space in my old HDD to install one game, and even if i move all my stuff to the new HDD, i'd still have little space for game installation, so i really want to install games in my new HDD.

So you have a new drive letter in explorer? You can browse it, create new files, folders, etc? But no programs will install on it... That is weird. Ive never seen a program that requires to be installed on C. If it needs to write to the reg that is a separate issue, programs will often also install stuff to the C drive, but most of the data will get to whereever you install it, and ive never seen a program that won't install somewhere other than C drive.

Yes, it's happening exactly what you are saying. I'm freaked out, because today i tried to install Left 4 Dead, but i got an error message during installation, something about a sound file missing or damaged (I know the problem is not the game, for i have seen similar errors in other games). Then, after the unsuccessful installation I tried to erase the folder created in my new HDD, but couldn't. Everytime i tried to, the program just stopped responding, so i had to format it again. I'm getting very frustrated...

Sounds like a bad drive, tbh. You might want to check your connections, and maybe try another sata cable if you have one.

theirs something wrong here because you should be able to install filed on the new drive once it's formatted their does not need to be an os or portion on it. Reformat and try /chkdsk

I would delete the partition, then recreate it then reformat it, full format. If that doesn't do anything, run a low level diagnostic on it and see if anything comes up. One from your manufacturer that you boot from...

they shouldn't have to be. can you write to the drive at all? you could try deleting the partition and creating a new one
