So, I have a computer Im trying to diagnose. Ive tested the HDD - its fine. The PSU seems fine. Motherboard seems fine and audio visual seems fine but when I do a memory test the computer shuts down. Now either the CPU is overheating and the computer is cutting off or the RAM is THAT bad. Im not sure what it is. Before the computer was getting a 0x0000004E blue screen error so I nuked the hardrive and tested whether or not it was bad and the whole test went by with no errors.

The only time the computer reacts is when the memtest is going. I ran the computer for hours when I first nuked the drive and no shutdowns or restarts occured so what do you think is the problem?

Have you tried Memtest x86 yet or are you using the built in memory test in Windows? I suggest you run Memtest x86 and see if there are any errors. If you have errors, you either have bad memory or you need to manually configure your memory settings in the BIOS. Voltage, stepping, speed, etc.

Theres no overclocking. And yes Im using Memtest x86+ version 4.2. It makes the first pass and shuts down. Im usually not there though. lol cuz I always step away instead of watch. There werent any errors during the first pass though. I dont know.

And what do I do if there arent any memory errors? I plan on letting it go for a few hours. At least 6 passes. I also cleaned out the CPU fan and it hasnt crashed or shutdown. Maybe the processor WAS overheating? I cant be sure til the test is done. I also tried doing a CPU burn test after the clean up and no shutdown. ALSO - if I have no OS on the hardrive - should the computer be playing the sound it plays when it POSTs? Cuz I dont hear it. It does get past the mobo screen and into my testing software - the Ultimate Boot CD so should I be worried? Im pretty sure the speaker is hooked up but I have to check the wire when the test is done and the power is off.

How many RAM sticks do you have? If you have 2 or more take them all out then put in one then start the PC. Shut off then add another and so on to try and isolate if one of your mem modules is damaged

I'd make sure to do a clean install of windows.

I've had memory test freeze and shut down on me before even though the memory was good.

I'd also try doing a Bios update.

Can even try adding some extra voltage to the northbridge and so fourth. Which solved my problem, which was from overclocking tho.

I'd say you download prime95 run a Blend test to test your ram and system. If it passes it means your ram is fine and the system is stable, should know in less than 5-10min. It also means it isn't hardware related and your windows is messed up with something you did.

MAKE SURE TO DO IT IN SAFE MODE! Removes all relations to Windows.

If it fails hardware remove ram sticks one by one and repeat test. If it still fails it could mean your rams bad or most likely your motherboard.

Last resort you could try increasing your voltages.

Part that are good for sure: CPU/PSU

I dont think any of them are damaged. After cleaning out the computer I set the memtest up and the thing ran for 13 passes without failure OR any errors at all. Same goes for the Hardrive - went through the whole scan without a single error. CPU is running at 40*C too - which is great. Mobo isnt doing anything funky either. I dont get it. And PSU seems to be fine cuz the computer runs for hours on end without any issues. What else is left? Maybe Windows was just messed up when it was installed? And what about my question about the computer POSTing. Should the POST sound come if there is no OS?

What do you mean by post sound? Like the random beep you get when you boot the system? Then yes that's normal.

Yes, the POST has nothing to do with the OS. Your speaker probably isn't in right. Problem or not, the system will always have some sort of beep when posting.

Well I checked the wire and it was in correctly. I also heard the speaker go off when I finished the hardrive test. What do you think the problem is? I hear no beeps at all. I do see the mobo screen and then the hardware monitor report after that and then it boots into my boot CD but thats it. No beeps. What do you think? Is there a way to test the speaker?

I wouldn't worry about the stupid beep. Not all motherboards even come with the Beep or even need it.
