So I decided after about a year and half of trying Half Life 2, I would give it another go as I'm bored as hell. All I have is the CE CD, and apparently to play the damn single player I need a key, which I don't have anymore. Is there ANY way around this, because I never heard of something so absurd to play a single player game....And I don't even remember my old account name.

*BTW, you would think the geniouses at Steam would put the CD Key on the actual CD, that way you have no way of forgetting it as long as you still have the CD...

Actually, I mean I never heard of having to activate the game online, and once it's activated your screwed in the future. Or if you don't have the internet...

welcome to the future, many games will require activation, not just hl2, bioshock (crysis probably) and a few others although you are right its not common. All you need is your account name or email and you can get it back.

If people bought games rather than downloaded them then there would be no need for it but as PC games suffer from poor sales as a result of Piracy then these actions need to take place.

All right here is what you have to do. . 1. Install steam. . 2. When you run steam and it asks for your ID and password select (forgot password). 3. Type in the E-mail address you used to set up the account. 4. Check your E-mail for a message from Valve or Steampowered.com. 5. Open the E-mail and write down your Steam ID and Password. . 6. Put your ID and password into Steam. 7. Install your Game of choice.

I agree, online activation is because of piracy, and I think companies should use it, if a better product is the result. I myself am guilty of pirating the game Mafia, though because I couldn't find it in stores. Was released how many years ago?

You know what? Online Activation doesn't prevent piracy. There are illegal downloadable copies even of Half-Life 2. Online Activation is just a burden on the average user, highly unnecessary and it certainly doesn't stop pirates, it only delays them in some cases.

Its not really Steam's fault you not only forgot your Account's name, but also lost you cd-key. Its not absurd to think you should look after these things if you want to keep your game.
Even a game lacking online activation would require you have your cd-key.

As annoying as it is that is why I keep my PC game boxes, most of the time the key-code is on the manual than on the cd case.I'm good at after playing or getting bored with a game to "uninstall" it so I have more space. Then when I get bored again,"re-install" it.......hmmmmmmmm come to think of it.....where in the heck is my Counter-Strike???

It is absurd to think I can spend 50 dollars on a videogame, only to not have access to playing it within a few months because I don't keep junk laying around. And if I don't have access to the internet, oh well? I alsohave two very young children in the house, so keeping videogame boxes and every piece of paper that comes with it is more absurd for me than a man living in his parents' basement.

Hey guys, I got a great idea! HOW ABOUT! YOU WRITE IT DOWN! No wai lol!

Really, just create a text document, or write it down physically, save it someplace safe, and you can go burn the case if you would like.

So now its only been a few months? In your topic you said it has been a year and a half. As for the comment about junk, yeah,if you lose things that are required to play the game that you consider junk,it can be hard to play the game.
Also,I don't understand the internet comment. You don't have access to the internet yet you are on a forum?

Finally,I made no personal comments against your character and simply stated that CD-keys are a necessity now-a-days.
in a way I agree its becoming a hindrance more for the honest people that buy the game than it is for the people illegally downloading them.

Anyway,at least look on the bright side, you have more time to spend with your children. Its not something that ever gets boring, unlike video games.

It's not the game's, Valve's or Steam's fault that you lost/forgot your CD-Key. Either contact customer support or just get a new copy. A CD-Key is like a Social Insurance Number, you have to keep it safe and in a place where you will remember it. Plus, my HL2 CD-Key is on my jewel case, I don't know many people who throw out jewel cases.
