Carmaggedon deserves to be remade with updated technology. I think it's one of the most original racing games out there. I remember the awesome car physics where you could crash your car in crazy ways and even split it in half. It's much better than any other similar titles like Twisted Metal or the more recent Racing/Zombie killing game ( can't remember the name).

If they are going through with this I'd really like to see the following fundamental elements:

- A variety of vehicles ranging from standard racers to huge truck and metallic abominations.

- Realistic car destruction that evolves what SSI did with previous games. Car shape and weight affects it behavior, size of wheel also affect grip and handling. Crashing truly breaks the car apart ( There is hardly anything like it today ). The car can split in half on three axis!

- Huge cities with population to run over and kill in fun ways.

- Perks such as the awesome springs, electros, nitros, gravity changers etc

- Make it violent, in a serious way. Decapitation, Dismemberment, Disembowelment, Smearing body parts on the road etc

Here's a vid with some nostalgic gameplay:

Calling Carmageddon a racing game is pretty generous. As I recall you couldn't actually ever lose the race (just run out of time). Still, if they update this game and add a real racing mechanic I'd be curious to check it out.

First carma = pure, unadulterated glee that no game has matched since (probably why I keep gaming--like a junkie, still looking for that first unmatchable high). I hope this new one is good, but the first Carma set the campy fun-bar so high that probably nothing will equal it. Will monitor its progress, though.

You could definitely lose in the traditional sense ( finishing last ), but there were other ways to win like destroying all other opponents.

When speaking of racing games in general I tend to consider realistic car physics and handling as the most important elements in such games. This is why, for me , Carmageddon is up there with the best.

Some more racing game with awesome physics:

- 1NSANE (2001) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJJ-mHBl5X4&feature=related

- Viper Racing (1998 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ajLa91SASQ

- All titles by Codemasters, Colin McRae, Dirt, Grid etc

Carmaggeddon was so much fun, but what I remember so much about was all the controversy around its release, think Manhunt 2. The one thing I am hoping for in this new game is PLENTY of blood and gore! I don't want another MK vs Dc on our hands....

Good grief I'm exited. Absolutely loved Carma 2 - still have a big box original, Carma 1 was grand as well. But yes, it *needs* to have all the gore, violence, physics, complex destruction, open levels and absolute crass rediculousness. and.. AND. An Iron Maiden sountrack, please

This is a good point. Very high bar Carmageddon has set. Anything less or altered too much in this new version and it will definitely fail. C1 had the perfect balance of gameplay pieces and how it all worked together.

No, you could run out of time which ended the "race". There was no concept of position (1st, 2nd, etc). The game just let you finish the race by completing the circuit instead of wrecking the other cars, but the other cars would never finish ahead of you. Basically that made the game a giant timed sandbox, which is fun but a mostly objectiveless sandbox is only entertaining for so long.

Great news about Carmageddon, I remember playing Carma 1 on my Pentium 133mhz and I upgraded to a Pentium II @ 400mhz for Carmageddon 2. I just hope things go well for them and they pick up a publisher that is willing to take a few risks so that Stainless Steel can give us an excellent game.

Meanwhile we still have some time to wait till we see a new Carmageddon so if you are look for a bit of action similar to good ole Carma 2 then you could do worse than pick up a copy of "Clutch" I bought it today off steam and it has things in common with Carmageddon 2. You can find out more info here :-

A modern remake with current tech would be great. But i doubt we will see much of gore and violence in this game. However i doubt it will happen, propably a cheap spinoff, eg with zombies.

Good, I used to put so many hours into this game, definitely the most original racing game out there. Exploring the map and finding crazy powerups was the best.

Same devs as Carma 1, Splat Pack, Carma 2. Not a new indie dev...

It's also not a remake, more of a sequel.
