Bethesda Softworks became renown for developing:

  • Elder Scrolls: Arena
  • Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
  • Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
  • Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  • Fallout 3

BioWare became renown for developing:

  • Baldur's Gate
  • Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
  • Mass Effect
  • Neverwinter Nights
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The only games from Bethesda I have enough playtime with to judge are Fallout 3 and Oblivion. I loved Fallout 3 but thought Oblivion was average. I have played many games from Bioware and loved each of them (lowest score I have handed out to a Bioware game is 8.5 to KOTOR II) so I think Bioware wins.

Both WERE good devs (past tense) but recently I have not found any of their games enjoyable and loyal to their predecessors, its the same old simplified gameplay. But if I consider their previous works then I go with Bioware.

KOTOR 2 wasn't a Bioware game, Obsidian made that.

Good point, in that case the lowest score I have handed out to a Bioware game is a 9.0 which went to Jade Empire. I never finished neverwinter Nights but I would of given it an 8.0.

Bethesda makes some great RPGs. Oblivion is art.

But Bioware, their games I can play for days straight, they truely make masterpieces

I said Bioware on this one. As much as I loved Oblivion, and played it forever, Fallout felt like a dissapointment in general. The Kotor games were awesome though, the choices you could make really made the games memorable.

You know I actually have to go with Bethesda here.

While Bioware has made more great games in the past. Lately they've been slowing down A LOT.

On the other hand, Bethesda has been doing quite the contrary, they've seen a lot of really good releases in recent times, and not all of them are focused on one series. Bioware's main focus right now is on Mass Effect. But Bethesda has been really spreading away from their home turf, which is the Elder Scrolls series.

For me it's not so much, who has been the best developer, but who is currently the best modern developer. And right now, it's looking like Bethesda is the best taking into account only recent releases.

Bioware easily.

Even with weak showing as of late (I'm looking at you ME) Oblivion and F3 can't stand up to two of the greatest RPGs of all time: BG II and Kotor.

Bethesda is getting better and Bioware gets worse in every game. I voted Bethesda, they're trying to improve.

So, the two games designed for the simplified console market (JE & ME) don't match up to the one designed solely for the PC? Imagine that.
