Hi there,

For personal reasons I gave up gaming about 5-6 years ago; the last game I played was Oblivion. But now I'm back since last December and I was wondering what I missed out on the passed 5 years. I now have some nice games like L.A. Noire, Metro 2033 and Skyrim, but what games do I HAVE to pick up from the bargain bin? Any genre goes...

These are well known big hits:

Witcher 2

Starcraft 2

Portal 2

Deus Ex HR

Dragon Age Origins

Mass Effect Series

Total War Shogun

Lesser known but, still very good:

Mount and Blade Warband

One thing you can do is check the review archive: http://www.gamespot.com/reviews.html?platform=5&category=&type=reviews&mode=all&sort=score&sortdir=asc#

Then you can look at the top games and see for yourself the good games that came out. You don't have to agree with their score, but it is usually in the ballpark (+/-1.0).

Thanks for the advice, but I've done some research myself. This list I already know and apart from that I like it, I also consider it "dangerous" because a lot of games would fly under the radar. Maybe I should be a little more specific: What games do I HAVE to get from the bargain bin aside from the obvious mainstream blockbusters.

I'm sure there are lots of other indie games I forgot to mention, but I wanted to add one that I just remembered. Not sure if you're into these games, but Cthulhu Saves the World is a fantastic game, extremely funny too.

Change "New Vegas" to "3" and I'll agree :P

Also, someone said Minecraft, that is what you want!

Playing 3 now and I'm enjoying it, but finding it pretty difficult, I like it. :)

DanielDust's list is fantastic. If you like shooters, I humbly recommend Fortress Forever (free Source mod that plays like TFC), Killing Floor (just hit 1.1m copies), and Bioshock. :)

Today I bought Medieval II Total War gold edition for only €9.99! I used to love Rome and from the looks of it Medieval looks just as great. It´s cool to have such an abundance of good titles at hand for such low prices.

Also since you have been out of the loop for a while, Steam has a lot of great sales. I would check there several times a week.

They have 4 major sales year round though, Each near an Equinox or Solstice. Like Summer and Xmas time. You can get a lot of these games withhout ever going over $10-15, if you keep an eye on these sales.

I think I'm an old fashioned gamer. Whenever possible I like to have a hardcopy. I like having my games lined up on a shelf.
