The worst part about buying through steam is that the game is only linked to a STEAM account, so if that account is hacked somehow - we lose those games.

This question is out of a curiosity, what are the chances of a well-passworded steam account being hacked? I've invested alot of money into it and only plan on increasing that with some good releases..

The only way to get hacked is to click on a link some guy gave you and enter your account info there. So basically, just don't be stupid and trust illegal sites and you'll be fine.

Anything can get hacked - it just depends on how well secured your pc is. I guess we all take chances when using programs like STEAM and others. I use virus scans, anti-spy, and I run a router. If your password is secure as you say, chances are slimmer that it will be hacked.

try not to log on to steam if you are on public pc such as internet cafe..

worst comes worst, if you must use your steam account while you are on public computer, try to open pages of banking web pages that usually come with automated security.

back in korea I used to open this life-saving bank accounts (by openeing, you dont even need to log in) it automatically install anti-hack programs and firewalls until you close the page. korean suffered lot of identity theft in early 2000-2002, so now, most of their bank web pages automatically install a security to protect you while you are in public computer. im sure some western/euorpean bank web pages may do it also.

Do you mean hacked or keylogged? I don't think you understand the proper meaning of computer hacking.

I had my steam account hacked recently. But i didnt knew how it got hacked,i never wrote my account and pass in anyform also my steam client was autolog in.And i was siiting behind nice firewall still it got hacked and all my games were gone.

But i retrieved my account in 2 days and steam support was really helpful.

But that sucker deleted all my freinds list and added his own.

Hold on a second OP, while I compute the statistical probability of getting hacked via First-Order-Reliability-Method analysis of data forwarded to me by Steam executives.

Firewalls don't do anything. I've never actually seen a firewall prevent any sort of hacker/intrusion. You were probably keylogged.

If you haven't had your account stolen yet, you will in the future. Use common sense. Getting your account stolen because you have a password like 12345678 isn't getting hacked, it's called being careless.

Firewalls prevent unwanted traffic on unwanted ports from unwanted domains. Keyloggers don't have anything to do with that, because they would transmit via http which would be open on most computers. You wouldn't know what a firewall blocks unless you know what to look for.

I got my password jacked once when I was joining a counter strike source server and then when it started loading the map the game crashed, and steam crashed. Within a few minutes I got an email from steam saying my password and email has been changed :(

I had to file a report with them and 3 days later they recovered my account

it would depend on your password, if you use it anywhere else, and how often you download programs from unknown authors.

Keyloggers can be hidden inside files. Yes, some sites can even load a keylogger onto your PC without your knowledge. You need to be using the latest Firefox and preferably Noscript. Keyloggers obviously aren't blocked by firewalls, or else I wouldn't have suggested that being the case. Firewalls won't prevent you from being hacked.

false. a good firewall blocks programs not just the ports. mine by default will block any program trying to access any network unless i allow it. I don't need to know the name of the program before hand.

oh and btw i'm sure you can just call them and get your account back. they will have a record of changes to the account (like when that hacker steals your account and changes the pw and email) and also the way you paid for your games. they can just verify your info.

That's true for software firewalls, but I've never seen it on a hardware firewall. I never use software firewalls so I didn't think of them. My mistake.

I've installed original XP(no service packs/updates) with no firewall and was infected with adware (possible other stuff too) within minutes. lol That was without actually going/doing anything...

xp x64 SP2... no firewall, no AV, no Anti Spyware... ran it for 2 years without picking up a single thing. I ran clamwin and spybot before I said goodbye to xp (been a good ride) and they didn't pick up anything.

Just goes to show you that the best anti virus is a smart user.

SP2 fixes exploits that exist in original XP. I know for a fact one time I installed an XP with no service packs and it was infected with some sort of adware before even doing anything.

If you visit dodgy sites, download anything from ****(lol they censor fourCl-l4n wtf?) try and download hacks or just have a really stupid password then it has a pretty high chance. If you have a well secure password (and change it every so often) and know how to avoid phising scams and key loggers then it probabaly has a 0% chance. There are simple ways of playing your steam games without even logging on to steam (even if you don't have your account) but I won't list them for fear of teh ban hammerz.

Easiest way to hack a Steam account is to take their username, find another less secure site they use the same name on (i.e. random internet forum), and hack that instead. Most people tend to use the same passwords on various sites, so finding one's good enough to find the same ones on secure sites. And yeah, 'smart browsing' is by no means good enough. You can get nailed on sites, whether legitimate or not - those big sites have other ads that aren't under their control in rotation, and all it takes is one of the ad-hosting sites to get hacked. In the last couple weeks I saw boston.com's site get hit, and they're basically a straight newspaper website. Firefox+NoScript is pretty good at blocking drive-by downloads, even if it disables about half the internet. That said, Firefox without NoScript is essentially the same as using IE at this point, and has been for the last two-three years or so. People adapt to what's popular, and FF became popular.
