I'm upgrading from an integrated Geforce 9100 chipset to a 4870 and was wondering if there's anything specific I need to do, or is it a simple case off, slap in the 4870, then disable the chipset?

You dont NEED to disable the onboard...the mobo will just use your graphics card by default. Just make sure your PSU has the correct power connections, i think it needs a single 6 pin but dont take my word on that.

daytona you are correct in fact all NON x2 gpu's that require pin connectors from ati require the 6-pin.. these includ( some hd 3870's(dual layers only), all hd 2900xt's, some hd 3850's, all hd 47XX and 48XX cards. and (though vary rare to see) a handful of the old x1950's

Hi. I have an HD 4870 and it requires 2 - 6pin PCIE connectors

from the PSU. There may be models that require only 1 connector.

I don't know. Mine is made by HIS and is the 512Mb model.

Remove the graphics drivers for the 9100 first. Be sure that you only remove drivers for the graphics card and not for the rest of your motherboard.

You read my mind!! I've just tried to install the 4870 and the monitor remained black so have taken it out and will now remove the old drivers and see if that works.

Also -despite it beingkind of obvious - you connect the video cable to the new card and not the VGA outlet on the motherboard.

Newer cards typically have DVI outputs only so if your monitor only supports VGA or if you don't have a DVI cable you need a DVI to VGA adapter. Most cards ship with at least one of those.

There is no reason to apogolize.

What matters is that you got it working. I hope you enjoy the upgrade.
