I've had an Acer Aspire prebuilt laptop that cost me $399.99 in 2011 and it is working wonders. I have been able to run AC4: Black Flag, COD: Ghosts, BF3, BF4, FIFA 14, Skyrim, Mass Effect in 2K resolutions at a steady 60 fps for this price. I feel that the cheap laptops of today are the gaming rigs of yesterday.
I know I'm not able to game in 4K or have multi-monitor support, however I do enjoy gaming wherever I am now and know that if anything goes wrong I can just ride the disposable economy and just get 3 of these babies a decade vs. $1200 for a rig that will be done after 3 years anyways! Also to note I'm in year 4 of my current rig and it still has plenty of horse power, is showing no signs of slowing down and I am playing BF4 with top benchmarks! I fell that many overlook these rigs, not having ever entertained the notion themselves to buy one. Next time your rig conks-out, check one out!
I've included some jpegs of what I am proud to display as my minimalist-gaming-rig setup.
