I'm sorry, but I'm getting mixed responses to a general question I have. I have sort of asked it here, but want to pose it in a different way and see what people think. Very simply - what is the cheapest way for me to get over-the-air HD signal on an HDTV? I have a dvd player and a vcr (some say that can double as my tuner). Do I NEED a built-in tuner? I have DishNetwork and have no intention of upgrading to an HD package. However, it currently provides HD local channels. Do I need a built-in tuner to get those? Could I get a cheaper antennae to get hd signals? Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

You need an HD tuner to get them, whether that is inside your Tv, or a $175 external box doesn't matter. You need those in addition to a decent antenna. No VCR can act as an HD tuner. They contain a standard NTSC tuner only

Here's a simple walkthrough as to how you'd set one up: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11249_7-6264597-1.html?tag=txt

Beware, HD-Tuners are usually hard to find. As in, not usually readily available in your local electronic stores. And if you do find one, chances are they might be more than what you would have been willing to spend for it in the first place.

That said, I think it's probably adviseable to just purchase a complete HDTV that you really want to purchase (despite price inhibitions) since most HDTV's nowadays have built-in-tuners.

They have them at Best Buy and Circuit City
