You would have to throw in this monitor. It is a good quality one which is hard to find with all of the fake specs on LCDs.

And waste it? He could get a poshed out high-end rig with an awesome monitor vs an above average high-end rig.

It's easier to list all the parts you need if you're a bit more specific. For example, what size you prefer for a monitor? Do you need a good speaker set? Gaming kb, mouse?

Let's start with some first:

Speakers: Z-5500: $250

Gaming keyboard + mouse: $150-$200. Eg: Logitech G15, G7 or G9. Razer Copperheard.....

Monitor: If you're looking to play at 1920x1200 then you need at least 24" monitor and those monitors won't cost less than $400. Otherwise like roulettethedog said, you can get a good one for around $300, range from 20"-22".

So just for those 4 alone could cost almost up to 1k already but you still have 2k left, which is sufficient enough to build a high end rig.

And the price includes professional overclocking. They also have components if you want to DIY.

The best idea is to post a topic for people to build their dream machines. Then you will have people post rig parts. That monitor I put up should be good for you. You cannot buy a good LCD for under $350. I looked. Only a few aren't made with junky 6-bit screens.
