i saw this film last night and enjoyed the look and feel of it, though much of the plot was pretty cliched - really liked the ending though

but my real question is about the game COR: Escape from Butcher Bay

i know it has good reviews, but as an aging softie i prefer my fragging nice and sanitised, ie i prefer guns to fists and knives.

so my question for all you GSers who've played the game is: roughly what percentage of the game is punching/stabbing rather than shooting?

It's been while since I played it, but if I recall correctly the beginning is punch/knife and done quite well imo, and the latter 70% is shooting. The movies are decent, especially Pitch Black, but the game is 100 times better.

It's up to you. To be honest the gunplay isn't that great so I stuck mostly to fists.

the game is nothing like the film. if you like the film I don't whether you'll enjoy the game. I don't like the film (the previous Pitch Black is ok, but not good either for me), but the game is great fun!

For the most part you can choose to use either but there are several sections where you must use fists or melee weapons. It is really dynamic though and more fun then using guns imo.

It is really cool how you can snap the necks of guards. Are they going to remake this game for PC? Anyone know?

I heard the movie was really bad!!

thanks for the comments - i might well go for this game

on the comments about a 'PC remake', maybe i'm misunderstanding people, but my painstaking research reveals that COR:EFBB has been on PC for ages:

They're talking about Assault on Dark Athena which as far as I know is console exclusive.

I would say the game is roughly:

45% stealth/stealth combat

35% gunplay/vehicle combat

20% adventuring/interacting

There are two gunplay-heavy vehicles sequences and, that I can recall, three gunplay-heavy non-vehicle sequences in the game. The rest is light gunplay mixed in with stealth oriented sequences. There are instances where you can take combat or stealth routes, but for much of the game you'll be weaponless.

You would be doing yourself a great dissverice by not playing it

Just to clarify, Escape from Butcher Bay is getting a remake titled Assault on Dark Athena, which features a 40% longer singleplayer campaign which picks up where EfBB ends (I believe the Dark Athena is a slaver ship, but I'm not sure), will feature improved visuals, enhanced AI and multiplayer.

At present, the game is a PS3 and 360 exclusive, but EfBB was also released on Xbox first, then ported (after having been improved greatly) to the PC later on. The same could also happen with AoDA, but Starbreeze's last game, The Darkness, has not as yet seen a PC version, so it could go either way.

It should be noted, however, that The Darkness' publisher had nothing to do with EfBB, nor does it have anything to do with AoDA, so I am hoping for an expecting a PC version of Assault on Dark Athena some time in the future.

Hell yeah!

Escape from Butcher Bay is at number #4 on my list of best PC games. Assault on Dark Athena is (assuming it's at least as good as EfBB) the kind of game I'd buy a console just to play.

Remaking a game this "new" for PC seems kinda pointless, for consoles I can barely understand it since they now have HD and whatnot, but on PC even the original still looks good when you crank up all the settings. I loved the original, but I wouldn't buy Dark Athena just for some extra content.

Why not? A long singleplayer campaign, better visuals, etc. - what's not to love? It's not like it'll cost much either. Probably $20.

Oh, if it's only 20 bucks then I'll think again. Otherwise it just sounds stupid to me, I mean it's not an old game, it came out 2004, and imo it wasn't even flawed in any way. So does it really need remaking? A full sequel/prequel would had made more sense.

If there was one thing I would change it would be that you stay in First Person instead of going to Third Person when performing an action!

Early on its fists and knives, but after the half way mark it switches to lots of run and gun, kill everything gameplay. The game features mechs and a variety fo cool weapons to utilize against the enemy, so check it out :)

You won't care about the lesser amount of gunplay, you'll be too busy laughing giddily like a school-girl while shoving shivs into other prisoners' and guards' necks/backs.

The game is fantastic, easily one of the best "shooters" available for PC.

This was something i actually liked, shows there was a great amount of detail put into the character. Also shows its the same as in cutscenes.

when you say "softie" do you mean you dont like the up-close, gory violence?

If that is the case, then EFBB might not be from you. Not only is there punching and bashing people's faces in with makeshift maces, but there is neck-snapping, kidney-shanking, and (my favorite) running up to a guard, reversing his gun on him, and blowing his brains out.

As for your question, its about 50:50...for the first part of the game, its mostly melee combat. For the latter half, its mainly guns (tho you can choose to go melee). And for the very last part is practically all guns iirc.

With that said, EFBB is one of the greatest and most underrated games of all time. Its worth owning 110, no...120%!

Don't give a crap about the films, but the game is amazing. Despite being mentioned on here quite often, I still don't feel it gets as much credit as it deserves. It seems it got overshadowed by the Doom 3's, the HL2's, the CoDs, and the FEARs, even though I think it's better than all those games.

jfsebastianII

It contains the entire original game (which has improved AI and visuals), but instead of ending where the original game did, it carries on into Assault on Dark Athena which takes place directly after EfBB.

Assault on Dark Athena is essentially a remastered and extended version of Escape from Butcher Bay. Or if you prefer, a gold version featuring the original EfBB as well as AoDA, which is (in a very literal sense) an expansion.

The reason they're remaking/extending EfBB is that Microsoft can't get it to work on the 360 as a backwards compatible game, and Starbreeze wants to establish the character and the original game with current gamers before advancing the story forward with a sequel (which was announced in 2004).

oh, and on the films i preferred 'COR' to Pitch Black btw - COR was more fantasy-like and interesting for me - Pitch Black came out around the same time as some other 'we're all stranded on a wierd planet' films and wasn't that great - i think i've started watching it twice and both times gave up on it

Having seen all the films and played the game extensively, I don't think it's THAT gorey so as to cause you not to play the thing. Yeah the shivs can be a bit messy along with the other bludgeons but I think you'll be happy with it. One geezer to another.

Ya, CoR was really good imo. I still prefer Pitch Black just cuz it was more "original" and, as a fan of scifi horror, it had a lot of scifi horror elements.

I hope they make more Riddick movies.

You can pretty much do whatever you want in the game. You can run and gun or you can sneak around. It's a great game, and you should definitely get it.

As for the movie - Vin Diesel makes me yearn for Arnold to stop being the Governator and make a big screen comeback.

The only movie-to-game worth mentioning.

Greating mix of shooting and melee for FPS. Great story and dialogue. Breathtaking graphics.

It did got a 9.3 on Gamespot plus an Editor's Choice. Stealth alone makes this game worthwhile.

About 6-8 months back I picked up this game from Overstock.com for about $10 (was the cheapest new copy I could find anywhere at the time) and I just got around to installing it about 3 weeks ago. I spent the better 2-3 hours of my freetime over the course of 5 days playing (I played about 10 hours, I had to replay a few spots because I enjoyed them so much or I wanted to try a different approach).

It took a bit of time to get the game up and running, though. With my 8800GTS 512 Nvidia card and the most up to date drivers, the game would not launch. I kept getting some runtime error....

After a bit of searching online I found my solution. I had to install RivaTuner and open the options to OpenGL and I had to force my graphic card to run OpenGL 1.3 or 1.5 (both worked, I just went with 1.5) in order to get Escape from Butcher Bay to run.

There were a few times when I would reload a saved game or if I died doing something stupid and the game would reload the most recent save, the game would crash on me. It didn't happen too often, but enough to be annoying. Luckily the game only took about a total of 30 seconds from when I launched the game to opening a new game or saved game to get into the action.

I'd strongly recommend anyone that enjoys FPS and Stealth games to pick this up and play. It's a lot of fun.

Did you get the 1.1 patch for Riddick? I had the same problems with my 8800GT at first but installing the patch got it working fine without having to force an older version of OpenGL.
