City of Heroes/Villains or World of Warcraft

Played both...
CoH/CoV is a good starter mmorpg - things do get a bit repetitive after a while
WoW is better looking (newer) and is more fantasy based, more expansive (will probably suck away more of your time)

btw I think there are ways to try both games for free if not cheap for a week or so...
WoW has a friend invite and the 1.99 trial at best buy/gamestop
the CoH / CoV games had a free trial, can't find an active link anywhere

Character customization - You can make a character from level 1 that looks different from *everyone* else in the game.  It isn't a time sink after you reach level cap.  You are encouraged to make alts.  Much more freedom like flying, teleportation...

 So I've been playing WOW since it came out and I recently cancelled my account.  If I'm looking for a new MMO would COH or COV be a better choice?xenophone

I personally vote for CoH/CoV. To me it just seems at a much faster pace, without too much worry about equipment or anything. It's rather quick to gain levels, and in large groups the combat can be insanely fun (the large the group you're in the more enemies there are in missions). That and it's something different from the other MMOs which are mostly fantasy. Also, I think it looks better than WoW, and it definitely suffers from less lag. No waiting to get into a server is a bonus as well.

Don't get me wrong, WoW has its up sides, but I'd rather get straight to the fight than worry about equipment. That, and I hate looking just like everyone else.

Played WoW for two weeks after playing City of Heroes for a few months - found WoW's gameplay to be sooooo sloooooow compared to CoH.  Felt like you were running thru mud, everything felt slowed down, leading me to suspect the devs of doing it on purpose to try to keep people playing longer.  I liked having more things to do in WoW (skills and trades), whereas all you do in CoH is fight villians Period, but I could see sewing leather scraps together for 15 minutes at a stretch getting really old, really fast, too.

As a personal preference, I also didn't get into the swords and sorcery aspect - more of a realism fan in my gaming.  Not that superheroes are "real," but just the whole atmosphere of CoH was more to my liking - cityscape vs. fields and trees and villages - take a train to get around vs. a flying/running creature - guns and gadgets vs. bows and leather armor. 

 For many it's a question of taste, but as a long-time PC gamer taking personal taste into account, I'm still completely at a loss as far as what the big deal is with WoW. 

COH/COV is mediocre at best. Aside from the character creation, the actual gameplay blows. WoW is the clear choice here.venomblack

I have played wow for about a year and a half now , got my char to 60 , and now after the xpack its at about 64 , im startin to get bored of it and im thinking about coh , i have played the trial before and i really liked it , and from what i read its pretty good end game as well. the only problem i have is getting the game cards ... do they have them and where can i get them from. (im in brisbane btw)
