Which do you guys think is the better game and why? I'm thinking of picking up one of them and just wanted to know what some people thought about them.

Gal Civ 2, I just love making my own ships, and the depth of the game is just amazing too. Also, I hate how Civ 4 limits you to the year 2050.

if you want a an addicting game thats lots of fun grab civ 4.  on the otherhand, in my opinion, gal civ 2 had more long term enjoyment.  civ 4 got old after a few games for me.  gal civ 2 took a bit longer to get into, once i was i played it for longer.

Civ 4, no doubt. Civ4 has a streamlined tech tree. GalCiv2's is all over the place -- who knows what Mark III Laser 2's do, anyway? In Civ 4, you're dealing with the alphabet, not BS made up by the design team. Civ4 has much less required micromanagement. In Galciv2, each planet has two production lists -- social buildings and military units run simultaneously, which demands that the user focus on BOTH for each planet. This is twice the attention Civ4 requires, since in Civ4 you only can build EITHER military units OR social productions, not both at the same time. Also, GC2 forces the play to manage an overall social/economic/political spending policy for his entire empire, whereas Civ4 focuses only on culture sliders. Much less micromanagement. Civ4 feels much more natural. You're building wonders like the Pyramids and Stonehenge while battling the Egyptians in Civ4. In GC2, you are building a "galactic embassy" while warring with the Yor over Sector A-B-2. It just doesn't feel as interesting as it does in Civ4. Galciv2 has good AI, but Civ4's is more than enough of a challenge on the Noble difficulty, which equates Human and AI bonuses, more or less. If that's still not challenging, try the Civ4 Better AI mod. I've played both games to death. Civ4 is the clear winner.

Agreed.  I loved both of them very much and both of them were worth the price.  The previous posters all have great perspectives on what differentiates both games.  Good luck in choosing!

I had this very same question a while ago and in the end I went for Gal civ 2, it is a very deep experience, the AI is fantastic and the customisibility is great, you make a galaxy, one of tiny, small, medium, large, huge or gigantic(trust me, when it says gigantic, it means it), you can then choose stuff about your galaxy, e.g. rarity of planets, then you choose your race, there's nine races to choose from, or you can create your own... Then it's onto the actual game, in which you have to win by either conquest, diplomacy(setting up alliances), influence or technology, to do that you must use every tactic you can think of to dominate and win.

Does that sound good to you? Then get gal civ 2.

THeyre both great so there is no wrong choice, but I definately like GalCiv 2 a lot more.  Its different, and its got a great sense of humor.  If youre a history buff, then go with Civ4, if not then go for GalCiv 2.

If you want a really good Si Meier game, go for Alpha Centauri.  Oldie but a goody!

I think its very hard to dislike Civ 4. You cant go wrong with it.

However, i think Gal Civ2 is a better game, but it's not for everyone.

There's no multiplayer.

Get both if you can, if not get the original and see how much you like it, if you like it a lot, get the exoansion pack.

I love Civ 4.  And I'm a big sci-fi fan, the theme of Gal Civ 2 looked so cool to me and appealed to me a lot.  But then I got it and played it and it turned out to be not good at all.

Civ 4 is way better than Gal Civ 2 even if you love sci-fi and hate history, it's just two boring and requires way too much micro-management, like twice as much as Civ 4.

I really wish they made a sequel to Alpha Centauri, that was such a great game.  I thought about installing it the other night again, but I haven't done so yet

They're both great, but I prefer Galactic Civilization 2. If you want multiplayer get Civilization 4 because Galactic Civilization 2 doesn't have a MP

Tough call...

Civ IV is a lot more polished, but IMHO not as open ended as GC II.

GC II has a huge tech tree which I thought would always be cool, but I actually prefer the streamlined one CIV IV has.

GC II has a killer AI, CIV IV's pales in comparison. CIV IV has the better graphics if that matters to you.

No MP in GC II, CIV IV has that and a ton of other modes that you can configure.

They are both super replayable, so do what I did and buy them both :)

I actually... got very wrong with it. My first game was a disaster. It was just a smash in the face, too much at one time. Needless to say, no organization whatsoever, allies and enemies were thrown left and right. Buildings... I was unable to micro manage, so it was all build a bit of that and that in every city. Not to mention religion and political systems, I think I went through them all.. Tried again, same thing.

It was just a big click fest, have to try again some time .Â
