hey guys ive been hearing a heap about the upcoming title Civilization V and im really hanging for a new game at the moment, i havent played a Civilization game prior and was wondering if it would be a to steep a learning curve to just jump straight into the release.....?

and as i havent played a Civilization game before can it be likened to something like Empire total war, and if not what can i expect?

I've played Civilization II and Alpha Centauri, and from what I've seen I think Civ V isn't too alien from the aforementioned games. In some ways they are like the Total War games, except you set up as many cities as you want anywhere and the combat is turn-based and handled on the same overview screen that handles everything else. The Total War games are also limited to the eras of the respective games, whereas Civ goes from prehistory all the way to the future. The learning curve isn't too steep. In fact in a lot of ways it's quite simple. If you can learn to play the Total War games, you can learn to play the Civilization games no problem.

Civ is extremely easy to get into they have a huge range of difficulties to get you acclimated to the game. I suggest watching the gameplay preview and game review on gametrailers to get a good idea for what the game is and how it plays.

Have you seen any of the reviews? the interface is clean, removing unnecessary clutter and it is being praised for its accessibility for newcomers, but at the same time retaining much of its depth for experienced players. There is a 200+ page Bible to read that isnt all that necessary to follow. But if it is anything like the Civ IV--which very rich in-game tutorial to get the basics--the information is delivered gradually as you progress and you should naturally pick up the concepts purely on details provided in the game. All you really need is patience; have that? and you'll be rewarded with a very rich, satisfying and compelling strategy game.

I say just jump in. My first time with the series I saw a friend play it and it didnt seem all that interesting but after I tried it myself, man was I hooked.

I say pick it up! The previous games in the series are good for veterans and newbies alike :D

thanks for the answers guys, it does look good.

i don't want to spoil my Civ experience by looking at reviews etc, i want to go into the game naked and exposed and try and enjoy it for what it is, i just didnt want it to be so frustrating trying to understand the whole make-up of the game that it took the enjoyment out of it, i didn't really like empire total war, i really enjoyed the macro of cities etc but didnt like the battles, they got a bit "same old same old" after a while and i found myself skipping them.........

you said that battles are done on the same map as everything else, i take it battles arn't the real focal point of the game then....more like a part of it but not the most important factor.....if that is the case then it sounds more enticing by the minute.

you can say that Total War games take the empire management element from Civ series, and make it more simplistic. Civ is all-out empire management, which far more complex compared to Total War. Civ's combat will also be in turn base, chessboard styIe, not in the total war real-time fashion.

the basics for all Civ games are the same, and so, it doesn't matter which one is your first Civ game.

yes, battle is only one aspect among many in the game; of course if you're blood thirsty, you can invest in army-building and go out conquer the world with force. However, you can "win" by many other ways.

Thought I would bung this info in here, if you want to know more about how to play the new Civ 5 game then they have released the FULL manual to the game in PDF form here :-

http://www.civilization5.com/#/community/feature_manual

The manual is hefty coming in at 25mbs but it should be a good read and naturally you will need adobe reader. This is legit and not in anyway anything to do with piracy it is just the manual and it has been released to give people a chance to read through it before the game comes out.

Lol when i first played civ 4, i was confuzed to the max. So after a few minutes i took a break, and when i got back in i was just amazed. It just came to me how to play just by experimenting, and it was great fun. To this day, i think CiV 4 has a place in one of the best empire management games of all time. Cant wait for V

guys, where are you all pre-ordering from? I'm having trouble discerning the best deal. Amazon, D2D, Steam and others have free maps. But K-Mart has a free $20 gift card. what say you?
