While I've never played DoW's world based campain(I'd like to sometime), I cant see these two games as a direct compairison beacuse at it's heart DoW is a real time strategy game and Civ is a turn based strategy game. Both cater to different audiences so the poll comes down to which do you like more; Turn based or Real time.
The fact that most Linux distros come with FreeCiv (an open source civilization project with tons of contributors) should seal the argument. Just the first civilization game is better than all of the DoW's.
Don't get me wrong, I love the DoW games. But without Civilization, it's hard to say that the strategy genre, let alone the RTS genre would have ever taken off.
Well to be frank I must say I have more reason to play DoW over civilization.. If I want to play a TBS game I would rather play Total wars (Rome or Medieval 2) OR Heroes of Might and Magic 5..
