Is it safe to NOT remove thermal compound from a cpu when buying a new cooling fan/heatsink?

I guess if you don't bend any pins (mobo for intel, cpu for amd) then there's no problem, but I can't say the same thing about what kind of temperatures you'll be getting :D

If you don't have any kind of special removers then do what I do, use a tissue to remove it. Did you buy a new HSF and it doesn't come w/ thermal paste?

When you buy a new cooler, you NEED to clean the old thermal compund and apply new. All coolers Ive bought have came with extra thermal paste so no worries there. To clea the old paste off use alcohol 70% or greater and you can use Q-tips to clean with. Make sure not to get any paste on the motherboard if you do you need to clean it off and let it dry before applying new.

I just use a damp cloth and that has never caused me any problems... on older CPU's I used a pencil
