I'm looking for over-ear closed back headphones to use when travelling and in the company of others. I listen to all types of music, but mainly heavy metal and soundtracks from animes and video games (please don't judge) and I will possibly also use it for playing video games. I can spend up to £130 on them alone (about $200 as I live in the UK).I would like a pair which is good on bass, clarity and soundstage.I will also be getting a FiiO E7 portable headphone DAC amplifier to go along with them. Can I get a few recommendations for the best available within that budget?

Sennheiser HD25-1 II http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TDZOXG/ref=asc_df_B000TDZOXG1870881?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B000TDZOXG

might be a goodd choice( finally heard these the other day!!) as far as portability goes, matched with all your requirements. I haven't heard them with a lot of genres you specified, but he's someone else's opinion http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43566

Thanks Gamespot for butchering my beautifully linked post ughhhhh

My friend has a dj1 ultrasone which is the same as the hfi 580 ($150 usd) ultrasone but with different casing, so you may want to consider those two. I tried his dj1 and liked almost every aspect, quick responsive bass, good soundstage for closed, and very clear imo. Its fairly portable since you can fold it, but is not that small either so it kind of varies to the person. The only draw back I saw is the instruments not sounding true to let say acoustic, also I guess is closer to a fun headphone rather than neutral and true, but Im no musician or audophile just someone that listens to music a lot. Supposely hfi 780 has more details than the former but with less bass.

Oh yeah you should be proud of your interest in videogames tunes and anime, I mean is nothing to be a shame about as a grown person unless your still in grade school :P You'd be surprised of my interests along with my friends (I tricked some of them into those kind of genre) that taps into anime themes too along with kpop, jpop bubblegum variations.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50 is well under your budget and sound as good as headphones in the $300 range. They're not nearly as comfortable as the DT770s, but the DT770s aren't very portable, and you mentioned you would be traveling a lot. The ATH-M50s are probably the single best value in headphones up to about $250, when you start getting into certain Beyerdynamic, Denon, and Sennheiser models.

Good luck,

Boz

Thanks for all of the replies. I am looking at both the DT-770s and the ATH-M50s as has been recommended. I know the former are not very portable, but I am split on whether their comfort can make up for that. It's a bit tricky since I will be travelling, but I shall also be wearing them for several hours also so I have to take both those factors into consideration before making my decision.

Don't forget the Denon D2000, good luck! HD-25 is supposed to have the best isolation and be one of the best headphones for rock, but really forward and lacking soundstage.
