i've just finished playing through the SP campaign in COD 1 and thought it was great - i know COD4 has a fairly short SP campaign, so might not bother with that (not into MP right now), but what about COD 2 and 3? any views on how they all match up? of course i've read the GS reviews but all other views welcome
I played all 4 COD games, and 2 and 3 aren't as good as COD 1. Why aren't you playing COD4? It's single player might be shorter than the previous COD games, but in my opinion it's the best COD game of the series. COD4 gives you the atmosphere of war with realistic sounds and amazing graphics. I strongly recommend COD 4 over all others.
Make sure you get Call of Duty United Offensive and Call of Duty 2. Call of Duty 3 wasnt that great. Call of Duty 4 is ok i guess, not a fan of Modern Warfare though.

I gotta agree with him, although the campaign may be short, it's got some of the best scripted sequences in any game i've played. Not to mention that the story,while not great, is definately a step above that found in the other COD games.
Having beaten all except 3 I'd say 4 is hands down the best. It moves the franchise in a new direction by ditching the tired old theme of ww2, while looking amazing and is greatly optimized. It may have been heavily scripted and very short, but in the end those few hours were some damn good gameplay. Besides I don't play cod for it's sp.
CoD1 is by far my favorite.CoD4 was ok, i'm not a fan of modern crap though.Like in multiplayer, the helicopter and airstrikes and UAV crap gets old fast.I miss the good ol days of CoD1
Thanks for all these replies, guys, that's really useful - i didn't know about UO, so that sounds like a cert, and as i quite like the WW2 theme, maybe i'll go for COD 2 and wait 'til COD4 comes down in price a bit so i don't feel so bad about it being short
