Well I'm a big FPS gamer and I really enjoy games like DoD:S, CS:S, TF2, etc. Strangely enough, I never got a chance to pick up CoD4. Well I noticed that on Steam the price has dropped by 20% for a limited time. My question is, am I missing out on anything? Will it have longevity (Like will people still be playing the multi-player for a while?)? Most importantly, is it fun? I've heard really good things about the single-player, and tons of great things about the multiplayer. I've also heard some things like the MP is kinda imba, and the single-player is pretty short. These days, I don't have a ton of time for gaming and so I usually try to get through the SP pretty fast so I can just have fun with the MP so that's not really a problem to me. The MP imba issue sounds kinda weird though... Anyway, what are your thoughts on the game and whether it would be a good purchase for me?

Yes it is a good purchase and if COD 5 will be a letdown it will be played for a loooooong period of time.

The sp is short but long enough. It is as long as needed, for you to keep interest in it, any longer and you would start to get used to it and get bore. It is very fun and intense and the cut scenes and the game mechanics make an awesome atmosphere.

The mp part is awesome and very fun (more than TF 2, for me) + there are more and more servers with custom maps so if you get bored of the included maps you can always go on custom servers.;)

It is also one of the most played MP games now. 1 is CS 1.6 and 2/3 CoD4 and CSS, sometimes CoD4 has more players online than CSS.

If you buy it for a shooter and not an action role playing shooter or whatever you would call that type that everyone who says CoD 4 is over rated compare it too, then yeah CoD4 is the best game from it;s genre that you can buy ;).

singleplayer is great and i don't think it's too short.

multiplayer is good...with a few flaws.

personally, i think the biggest flaw about multiplayer is that it takes NO SKILLS to play, seeing as the players die in about 1 hit, so its always first shot first kill.

Well with the horrible server browser, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.

I played CoD4 and then TF2, my tastes tend towards TF2. CoD4 was a great buy and I dont regret buying it like I do for Crysis. Thing about CoD4 is that there is hardly any differentiation in the game. Although it is fun there is no real distinguishing differences like sniper, scout, etc like in TF2.

Bottom Line: If you like casual then stay with TF2, if you want realism go CoD4. I know where I stand

You said the magic word "realism", I am with you but I'm sure there will be one or more that will say that its not real and it's Hollywood crap :. It really is the most realistic FPS game made so far.

Check out the demo. I'm waiting for it to be 19.99 before I buy it. The campaign is criminally short, you can't tell friend from foe (and this is a huge deal in this game), and from what I've researched the multiplayer is basically a baby-mode of crysis' online but with muuuch less hackers. Basically all you do is spam and try to snipe. I personally cannot stand mindless spam fests.

I think it's a good game. I'd wait for it to drop into the $30 mark before buying it though, because it feels like a $30 game. It has a short singleplayer and a repetitive multiplayer. The graphics aren't much of an improvement over CoD2 and aside from penetration the game is largely the same.

MP - http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26405273&msg_id=301781376#301781376

SP - Mrs. Scriptor (Examples: u can't do doors, only ur teammates when u touch a trigger another one: the first demo or level demo when u get a ladder leading to a second floor ur teammates is already there sure they respawned there cuz u rich that point first. they had a party with enemies. I guess  ) SP is also short, boring-ass and contains the stupid, absolutely unremarkable story.

The Singleplayer is only like 5 hours long and is so linear you feel like every single map is just one long winding corridor with maybe an extra path here and there. It's not particularly replayable, the AI sucks and the only real good thing about it is the cinematic intensity... which makes it feel like an interactive movie. A 5 hour long interactive movie.

MP, I haven't tried. However, I heard that from some people that they got bored a while after playing until level 55. You're a TF2/CS fan, right? CoD4 is like CS minus a fair bit of the competitiveness and way faster in pace.

However, if you haven't tried the first Call of Duty, I'd suggest that first. It's much cheaper and offers a longer and better (more epic, which is good for drama, which is good for cinematic intensity) campaign. The dialogue is worse in CoD1, but the campaign was more....fun.

General Answer - NO

Reason - Certain "intelligent" individuals around here think it's overrated.

My Answer - Yes, you should definitely get it.

Reason - It's one of the most immersive games i've played so far.

 Are you joking?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. especially with Oblivion Lost mod is far more realistic than CoD4. You don't take a dozen bullets to your face and regenerate, AI actually exists, you aren't incapable of opening doors despite being a highly-trained soldier (admittedly in STALKER, there aren't many doors to open), you actually have to bandage your wounds or die of blood loss, .etc.

The only thing CoD4 has got over STALKER in realism and atmosphere is the fact that there isn't a stupid fence surrounding each territory and the fact that guns can actually go through certain materials, noticeable. Otherwise, STALKER literally impales CoD4 in immersiveness.

Pretty shameful that a partially sci-fi game can be more "realistic" than a game where the setting sticks right to "realism" but the gameplay is hardly realistic. The guns aren't really realistic, either. The ammo stats, fire rate, looks etc is accurate to real life, but if it wasn't for the lack of a scope, I would call the mp5 an inaccurate automatic sniper-rifle.

I don't believe that COD4 can be called realistic apart from the setting.

However!

STALKER is not as realistic as it would like to be and seems to be caught in a bit of a haze.

While it does take you only a few shots to die (which is realistic yes) you do automatically heal over time. Even though it is much slower than that of COD. You rarely die of blood loss unless it is at its absolute lowest. Is it really realistic to have health kits and badages that can automatically revitalise your health? What about the magic pudding (voice by John Cleese much?) that gives you as much health as a fresh badge? Realistic aye?

How about the inaccurate weapons and poor hit detection that means it takes 7 bullets from a pistol to bring someone down?

What is with this door thing people :| has the world gone stupid and the only thing all the people care is a door? wtf, nobody complains about not opening doors in CS or 99% of the FPS games that can't open a door. Get real and bring arguments not things like this. You don't like the game then ok, bye, but don't bring this stupid argument that all people who say that they are "intelligent" mention. It's a door, the world doesn't revolve around it, go outside, smell the flowers, there is a world out that door ;).

And about stalker and the health regen. Excuse me but in real life, do you not regenerate in a certain period of time or you just take a magical health pack and get back in shape in no time? yeah it does regenerate pretty fast, but don't compare a game that uses a medic pack to one that actually does like in real life (regenerate) but in deed it's quite fast, but if you don't like it soo much make a mod to regen slower and be happy. It would have been a great addition to the damage system if you would lose blood and you would have to bandage yourself to regenerate and stop your health from decreasing but there are many things that can be included and the game as it is now it is the most realistic so far. Don't give me BS with 9999Xmods to make stalker or any games more real, it's about the original version not modded.

There's a certain reason I said "especially with OL mod". See, vanilla STALKER is one of the most realistic games ever created, but considering how unrealistic games are in general, STALKER doesn't represent real life (in the fictional zone anyway) too well. I agree with you.

What kind of environment has barbed-wire fences isolating certain pieces of land? What kind of gun cannot hit an unarmoured human at 50 meters distance and takes half a dozen shots to bring him down?

But...

By the "magic pudding" are you referring to health-regen artifacts? If so, then well it's pretty plausible considering it's a pseudoscifi setting. :|

No matter how much you can heal in your body, there are some wounds that will never heal. And in a game where you are constantly taking risks, that is a BAD thing. You can't expect a game to be COMPLETELY realistic, just fairly accurate to it's setting. And STALKER is FAR more accurate to its setting than CoD4 is.

You like doors, play Half Life. I'm not gonna argue with you because I know your opinion and you won't stop till you made your point, like in the most overrated game thread. Don't like the game, fine with me, but forget the door, you wouldn't play a game just to open a door or to carry a barrel (like you said in a thread, that you want to interract with objects and be able to use them as cover)or something after you under enemy fire, just to feel safe and to know that you can count on him (play portal for that reason). It's about shooting not Dress Up Barbie or Let's Decorate the House and Move Objects with Barbie.

well, comparing a modded game with a non-modded game is a bit unfair. i like stalker more than cod4, but i think both are great games. not being able to kick in doors doesn't really bother me. all i know is that i'm a lowly soldier in the game, and i'm supposed to follow captain price. i do agree the a.i. isn't impressive at all (basically, respawning troops), but the game is just damn exciting and everything feels so frenzied that i hardly noticed it the first time around.

I didn't mean the actual level design, more just the locations themselves.

I'm not talking about the artifacts. You can seriously pick up a can of pudding and eat it and it gives you a lot of health back, same with some other food, sausages i think.

I'm not asking the game to be life-like, just consistent. It seems that you can take a few shots but your opponents are far stronger.

Do you like Far Cry 2's health system? I think that it is probably heading into a better direction than the both the health packs and regeneration thing.

Have it you way. Yeah they could improve on the damage system and hopefully in CoD 5 there will be blood loss and after certain amounts of wounds the maximum health would decrease.

And what? from 50 m you can't shoot somebody?

On a custom map that is about 6-7 times bigger than de_dust 2 from one end to another I shoot a guy with the MP44, well snipe is a better term (1 max 2 shoots to kill) and I shoot with M4 and it was pretty accurate, about 4-5 shoots to kill and it was more than 200 m.

I would say that some weapons are too accurate.

lol....that's what i was trying to tell him. But he just won't let up. He's got the Doorknob Deficiency Syndrome(DDS) and the Barrel Fetish. It seems there's no cure for it at the moment. "This game sux because i can't open a door. WAAAAAAH".....how mature.

What kind of environment has barbed-wire fences isolating certain pieces of land? What kind of gun cannot hit an unarmoured human at 50 meters distance and takes half a dozen shots to bring him down?DanielDust

Jeez I was criticizing STALKER, not CoD4 in that comment. Get better eyes and read properly next time, k?

I didn't mean the actual level design, more just the locations themselves.

I'm not talking about the artifacts. You can seriously pick up a can of pudding and eat it and it gives you a lot of health back, same with some other food, sausages i think.

I'm not asking the game to be life-like, just consistent. It seems that you can take a few shots but your opponents are far stronger.

Do you like Far Cry 2's health system? I think that it is probably heading into a better direction than the both the health packs and regeneration thing.

biggest_loser

What are you talking about? I've never regained health from eating food.. though I've only eaten bread.

But actually eating food does help you heal (IRL). You regrow tissues and such, right? Where do you suppose the organic material for that comes from? Undigested faeces? It shouldn't happen so quickly, but like I said there's a certain point of realism to reach before it stops being a game and becomes a life stimulator.

Healthwise, well that depends on their armor. Obviously if you're wearing a Stalker suit and you're fighting a guy with an Exoskeleton, then he's obviously tougher. I thought my human enemies were pretty weak compared to me on Easy mode.

Far Cry 2's health system... I haven't looked up on that game, so I don't know what it is.

Thanks for dodging my point with insults. Kay, enjoy your static repetitive corridor shooter that you call "the most Realistic FPS ever created". Don't want to argue with me? Fine then, don't even bother quoting this comment. Discussion closed, bye bye.

It also seems to be a bit contrived that they have armour on sure, but you can't take it off them when exploring their inventory? Only on some you can...

Please get it. Though it's SP is short, I mean really short, it's filled with so many unforgettable moments.

And once you're done with the SP, there's the MP....(which I quitted since I can't stand respawning and getting killed just after a few seconds. Had fun with it nonetheless)

Oh and I think the game is pretty good, and definitely worth $40. Overrated by the vast majority of reviewers, but still great. It's cinematic, dramatic, intense and offers non-stop fast-paced action. Which would have been harder to do with open-endedness or whatever.

If the food doesn't heal you instantly, then what's the problem? It's not like you pop a piece of bread into your mouth and then your blasted-off-hand regrows or something.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to remove a badly-shot up piece of armour from a dead guy....

Also, are you sure your enemies are tougher than you? It might look like that, because enemies only have stun and die animations while you either go breathless from heavy bleeding, or shaky from alcoholic ingestion and psiattacks, and whatnot.

Well I have the difficulty on the second setting - I think its called Stalker - it only takes a few shot from a pistol to even kill you! Pretty tough game...

Do you think the game has good or poor hit detection?

I believe that you should not even ask... it one of the best games i've ever played... and of course multiplayer is very good and it will offer you many days of playing ;)
