Many many rts comparison threads lately, so I thought I'd throw all the recent best in here and see what happens. I've played all of them accept DoW, though I hear it's alot like CoH, and I much prefer World in Conflict over that. The camera controls are just more responsive and... controllable then CoH which makes the game feel better in that regard. Also, the gameplay totally throws the rts genre on it's head, more so then CoH which I found rather refreshing.

And yes, I know some people don't like to classify WiC as an RTS, but I'm going to :P

I don't like WiC at all because it has no resources management, I voted for CoH which I think is the best from those

yeah, I really enjoyed compant of heroes as well, but justenjoyed World in Conflict more, although there's no resource managment, the acctual combat side of things was handled really well, I guess WiC isfocusing specifically on battle strategy vs most other rts which are a combination of battle strategy and resource managment.

I found WiC's more focussed gameplay rather interesting :)

DOW for sure, I played coh and didn't care to much for it tho i thought both dow and coh were made by same people.

Basically DOW had a wealth of lore + GORE + Awesome gameplay.

I give a -50 points to c&C its a boring game that offers nothing over the others listed here. As for Wic im yet to play it , i don't like the look of it but lots of people rave about it. Then again lots of people rave about crysis and i find that game a little boring.

hmm this is interesting, WiC is doing the worst even though critics thought it was the best. It won basically every strategy/RPG GOTY award for 2007, and a few othersincluding best multiplayer game of 2007.

So, whats everyones thoughts on it, does it stray too far from the standard RTSformulae, or is it that not enough people have tried it? IMO what it does, it does superbly, the question is do gamers acctually want what it does :P

DriftRS

Real-Time Strategy compeition was relatively weak this year the majority of marquee releases were First Person Shooter games. If Company of Heroes/Dawn of War were released the same year as WiC, I highly doubt that WiC would have dominated the RTS awards like it did.

No love for SupCom?

I suppose CoH is win; I'm a sucker for historical RTSs. I got nothing against DoW, but WiC and C&C3 are too focused on combat for my taste.

C&C3 and WiC are pretty sucky imo. WiC looks nice, but seems quite shallow...and the lack of resource management is another negative. C&C3 is just pretty dull and boring tbh; it brings nothing new to the franchise or genre.

I have ben playing RTS games for about less than a year. I have played the most popular ones dating back to 2004. I can also say that as far as rating games Im very good. I can find strongpoints in a game and also its flaws. Im a person who unfortunately cant play all these wonderful games due to my schedule with school and football which takes up most of my day. Because of my strict schedule I needed to play the games that had the most to offer. Heres my list of the best RTS that Ive played so far, not including Warcraft III or Starcraft:

1)Company of Heores 2)Supreme Commander 3)Dawn of War 4)Command and Conquer 3

It was very difficult choosing between COH or SC for the #1 spot. I choose COH because its an RTS that pays attention to detail. Detail meaning if you train a certain unit that unit can be the reason why you win or lose a match. You sort of have to "babysit" each unit as their so valuble in determining the outcome of the match. Beautiful graphics, awesome physics, sound. They all make you feel as if you were in Europe fighting the war. Its gameplay is just awesome. Especially the fact that you have to control certain points in order to receive resources and manpower.

Now Supreme Commander is not your traditional RTS that you saw your uncle Bobby play growing up. This is war! And I mean it in every aspect. You cannot find a game more deep that Supreme Commander. Ground, Air and Naval units provide many options for the attack but at the same time landing a successful attack on your enemy can, at many times, can seem very difficult due to defenses. Supreme Commander is a game where you are constantly planning where you want your units to infiltrate from, which types of units to use, do I tech up now and risk low mass and energy or do I keep sending out lower tier units? Thats why Supreme Commander is referred to as the "Chess" of RTS. Very Complex but of all the RTS games none is more rewarding after a victory than Supreme Commander. Some matches last hours, yes hours, while some last less than half an hour. Many people dislike this game due to its complexitiy but if your an RTS gamer lookning for GREAT gameplay and a challenge found in no other RTS then look no further than SUPREME COMMANDER.

Dawn of WAR was a big hit in 2004. The gameplay is similar to Company of Heroes, you can say Company of Heroes took Dawn of Wars gameplay and implented to it. Its cover system, capturing strategic points are great. But what stands out from Dawn of War are its races. Up to 7 diffrent races and ALL are fun to play with. Each race with advantages and their disadvantages. The best part is the balance of them. Each race can holds its own agaisnt any other. Truly great game with hours of fun. If your into the Sci Fi RTS with a personality of its own and plenty of blood then consider Dawn of War. It is a must

Good old Command and Conquer. This was the series that baptized many RTS gamers. Though C&C3 had alot of hype and was highly anticipated it was sort of a let down. It seemed as if C&C3 is a remake of the earlier versions just with pretty graphics, some new units and alot of lasers. Plenty of lasers I must add. Not to take away from its gameplay which is phenomenal. Unfortunately C&C's fanboys will not admit of its flaws with C&C3. Its a fast paced RTS which really doesnt require much strategy and is more on cramming as much tanks as you can and shoving it down your opponents throat. Many have considered this game "Noob Friendly" and thats upsetting knowing that you can play a match and work a sweat agaisnt someone whos NEVER PLAYED RTS GAMES BEFORE!! I loved this game but its hard to play it after you played the others I have mentioned above. Its a rushers paradise with many imbalances. The GDI Mammoth tanks seem unstoppable when up agaisnt the other factions. Also its as in the infantry units do not exist in the latter part of matches. Still C&C3 is a great game and a must have if your a collector of the series.

In conclusion its a no brainer about my picks. Comapny of Heroes brings realism to gamers, Supreme Commander wages war on the opponents, Dawn of War adds a variety of EVEN races which are all fun to play, and C&C3 offers fast paced gameplay and beaitful lasers and beams.

While C&C3 has dissappinted many it most certainly belongs on this list. With its fast paced action, beautiful graphics and traditional gameplay you can see why so many people play it online. As a matter of fact its one of the top 10 RTS games played online. http://internetgames.about.com/od/strategygames/tp/tprts.htm. But you can argue its popularity is largley due to its fanbase of the prevoius Command and Conquer games. It placed #7 on the Top Multiplayer RTS Games List behind Warcraft 3, COH, WIC, COH OF, Sup Com and DOW. Now World in Conflict is certainly not better than C&C3 but the rest of these games are. If you study the pattern most of these games ahead of C&C3 have gameplay far from a traditional RTS. Dawn of War with its cover system, capturing of strategic points (rather than gathering resources) and its unique races provided excitement upon release. Company of heroes gameplay was pretty much the same as Dawn of War just with more depth and realism. Supreme Commander, the unofficial sequal to Total Annihilation, had gamers salivating at the long awaited return of a game which so many played long ago. But C&C3 ddint really add much. It kept the same gameplay of prevoius C&c games just with nicer graphics and brung Kane back. There was so much promise when gamers heard Kane was back. Unfortunately C&C3 never lived up to the hype. Many blame EA because EA knew how succesful the C&C series is. It appears they left the gear on cruise control and figured people would buy it cause of its history. They were 100% correct. Even though C&C3 sold over 1 million copies the hit it took from gamers was much greater. I myself am one. Lets say I were a store. Someone approaches me and says," Im looking for a GREAT RTS game. I only have $40 at the moment what should I buy?" Well Ladies and germs C&C3 would not even come across my head. Fanboys should understand this as well that it lacks the depth that other games have. Im sick of them defending C&C3 it only makes them look silly. Like I said in my prevoius post COH, Sup Com and DOW are bringing so many people who would have never even touched an RTS before. I am one of them. Thank you Chris Taylor and Relic for making me a believer.

Relic is going to announce a game later this year, and I am hoping it's DOW 2. :)

And C&C 3 sucks, what were you expecting? C&C 3's awesome? Ok, C&C 3 is awesome. :)

That's quite a bit of RTS games you've got battling out, you may as well have thrown Supcom and Sins of a Solar Empire in there (but if you put Starcraft in there then it would automatically win... and Total War is kind of behind in the time period..)

agreed theres a few titles missing down there, Warcraft/Starcraft/Supcom/Sins of a solar empire/Age of empires and quite a few other popular franchises, from those you listed tho my vote goes to CoH, since i never played WiC, even tho C&C3 is a good game its not great, and i never really enjoyed DoW(probly because i played SC First)

I voted for Company of Heroes because its just much more tactical and fun, its hard to explain. That said, I enjoyed WiC, and thought C&C3 was bewteen "meh" and "woot"-the dangerious middle ground. Waiting for Soulstorm for DoW.

My vote has to go to Company of Heroes. Fantastic RTS which the rest just dont compete with imo. While others will enjoy the other games, i just dont find them quite up there with COH. My favourite RTS since the old days of AOE, Warcraft 2, Red Alert etc.
