I have ben playing RTS games for about less than a year. I have played the most popular ones dating back to 2004. I can also say that as far as rating games Im very good. I can find strongpoints in a game and also its flaws. Im a person who unfortunately cant play all these wonderful games due to my schedule with school and football which takes up most of my day. Because of my strict schedule I needed to play the games that had the most to offer. Heres my list of the best RTS that Ive played so far, not including Warcraft III or Starcraft:
1)Company of Heores 2)Supreme Commander 3)Dawn of War 4)Command and Conquer 3
It was very difficult choosing between COH or SC for the #1 spot. I choose COH because its an RTS that pays attention to detail. Detail meaning if you train a certain unit that unit can be the reason why you win or lose a match. You sort of have to "babysit" each unit as their so valuble in determining the outcome of the match. Beautiful graphics, awesome physics, sound. They all make you feel as if you were in Europe fighting the war. Its gameplay is just awesome. Especially the fact that you have to control certain points in order to receive resources and manpower.
Now Supreme Commander is not your traditional RTS that you saw your uncle Bobby play growing up. This is war! And I mean it in every aspect. You cannot find a game more deep that Supreme Commander. Ground, Air and Naval units provide many options for the attack but at the same time landing a successful attack on your enemy can, at many times, can seem very difficult due to defenses. Supreme Commander is a game where you are constantly planning where you want your units to infiltrate from, which types of units to use, do I tech up now and risk low mass and energy or do I keep sending out lower tier units? Thats why Supreme Commander is referred to as the "Chess" of RTS. Very Complex but of all the RTS games none is more rewarding after a victory than Supreme Commander. Some matches last hours, yes hours, while some last less than half an hour. Many people dislike this game due to its complexitiy but if your an RTS gamer lookning for GREAT gameplay and a challenge found in no other RTS then look no further than SUPREME COMMANDER.
Dawn of WAR was a big hit in 2004. The gameplay is similar to Company of Heroes, you can say Company of Heroes took Dawn of Wars gameplay and implented to it. Its cover system, capturing strategic points are great. But what stands out from Dawn of War are its races. Up to 7 diffrent races and ALL are fun to play with. Each race with advantages and their disadvantages. The best part is the balance of them. Each race can holds its own agaisnt any other. Truly great game with hours of fun. If your into the Sci Fi RTS with a personality of its own and plenty of blood then consider Dawn of War. It is a must
Good old Command and Conquer. This was the series that baptized many RTS gamers. Though C&C3 had alot of hype and was highly anticipated it was sort of a let down. It seemed as if C&C3 is a remake of the earlier versions just with pretty graphics, some new units and alot of lasers. Plenty of lasers I must add. Not to take away from its gameplay which is phenomenal. Unfortunately C&C's fanboys will not admit of its flaws with C&C3. Its a fast paced RTS which really doesnt require much strategy and is more on cramming as much tanks as you can and shoving it down your opponents throat. Many have considered this game "Noob Friendly" and thats upsetting knowing that you can play a match and work a sweat agaisnt someone whos NEVER PLAYED RTS GAMES BEFORE!! I loved this game but its hard to play it after you played the others I have mentioned above. Its a rushers paradise with many imbalances. The GDI Mammoth tanks seem unstoppable when up agaisnt the other factions. Also its as in the infantry units do not exist in the latter part of matches. Still C&C3 is a great game and a must have if your a collector of the series.
In conclusion its a no brainer about my picks. Comapny of Heroes brings realism to gamers, Supreme Commander wages war on the opponents, Dawn of War adds a variety of EVEN races which are all fun to play, and C&C3 offers fast paced gameplay and beaitful lasers and beams.
