My son recently got a very nice gaming laptop for his graduation. He is very into MMO's yet our computer was horrible and couldn't play them well. I want to get him one now and i know he is debating bewteen Neverwinter Nights and WoW.

Aside from the montly fees(which i do not mind paying), which one gameplay wise and content wise is overall better and more fun

Any opinions wanted

Neverwinter nights isn't an MMO. and wow is like crack...so be warned. my advice is WoW. Or Guild Wars, because it's free to play and is utterly amazing. overall, Guild Wars has the most content if you get all versions.

Yeah, Neverwinter Nights isn't an MMO, so out of the two, WoW wins by default.

I have to ask, though, why your son isn't decicing for himself? If he is at graduation age he can surely make his own decision? Is it meant to be a surprise or something?

Both of them are RPG's (roll playing games) but WOW is a MMO (massive multiplayer online) but NWN2 is a great game, even though its only a single player he should still get it.

Id' recommend WOW:

1: it's a bit less athmosperic than neverwinter nights, (in that scary way) but far "bigger" in terms of world and back story.

2: there's so much more to "do" in wow: auction houses (my favorite mini-game in wow), exploring the worlds, the backstory, different races to play equals different takes on the same world, socializing, excelling in professions, etc.

if you ever want so see your son again, dont let him get an MMO, especialy WoW... Now personlly I hate WoW, but a few years ago I loved SW Galaxies to death (they screwed it up 1 1/2 years ago so im not playin now, as with alot of people), If I wasnt playing it I always thought about it, I was pretty obsessed, my grades went down and the family didnt like not seing me. However, every time I play a game I always think of it because it was the best game I ever played, and nothing ever can make up for it...so it still haunts me... MY RECCOMENDATION to you: dont let him play MMOs.

WoW is a damn good mmo, it can be addictive - you just have to be careful how you play it.

Pretty much covered my wow habit in my blog, if you want a primary exmmple of the worst habits, and better habits you can develop with the game.

Oh and NWN2 is a fun RPG, not an mmo, though the editor is damn flexible and fun to use.

There is only 1 MMO which is focused, from start until the end, on GROUPING.

This is City of Heroes/Villains.

As a grouper, it would be my only recommendation in the MMO wasteland, where every other game will try to make you PvP, RvR or Raid. You care about GROUPING? There is just no other options.

PS: You can solo all the way until the ultimate end also, they have a casual approach which is fine. Solo is viable (even if slower), can't really **** about it, even if I would rather have a strong focus on GROUP, I can live with that casual approach where someone can solo and master everything. :)

WoW is the king. It's like the Coca Cola of MMOs, as far as dominance goes (and Pepsi hasn't been invented yet).

NWN 2 can be played like an mmo by joining persistent worlds. Usually have like 100 people at the most or something around that range and getting into one is not always easy especially if they are not taking any people. But in many ways its better. Close knit community and ever changing storyline. Most mmos you are a number and there is no storyline just grind and kill this many boars quests. However in PW modules on NWN2 you can actually effect the world around you, you could be the guy that saves the day or the villian that started the whole conflict to begin with.

I would start him out on Guild Wars. Both of you could play it and no monthly fee. It's a great series and Anet does an awesome job with the games.
