Hi, I have a Dell e510 computer. I currently have a Pentium 4 installed and i was wondering if i was able to upgrade to the core 2 duos. It has the correct FSB speed and socket type, but they say it is not supported. Is this a "not supported by Dell" or not supported by motherboard. here is the quick lowdown on the mobo: Manufacturer: Intel ( OEM for Dell Dimension E510 5150 5100 ) Dell Compatible Part#: RD203 0RD203 HJ054 0HJ054 WG261 0WG261 J8885 0J8885 KF623 0KF623 Socket: LGA775 Supporting Pentium 4 5XX/6XX Processors 2.8-3.8 GHz FSB: 800/1066Mhz System Bus Expansion Slots: PCI Express x16 x 1 / PCI Express x1 x 1 / PCI x 2 Chipset: Intel 945G Other Features: Hyper-Threading Technology Support Connectors: (5 - Back - 2 Front) USB 2.0 Ports, 10/100 Network LAN Peripheral Interface: (2) Serial ATA (SATA) Interface Other: One IDE Channel Supporting ATA-66/100/133 and One Floppy Port Video: Onboard Intel 950 Graphics Accelerator + 1X16 PCI Express Slot and Audio: 5.1 Surround Sound Audio Ports Supported Memory: DDR2 400/533Mhz Maximum Memory: 4 Dual Channel DIMM Support for up to 4 GB of memory if it matters, i have 4 gig of 533mhz RAM installed Thanks in advance!
Let me rephrase that. They say that Pentium 4 is supported...they DON'T say that Core 2 duo ISN'T supported. (I would assume this is because at the time the P4 was the best processor available??) and i'm assuming this would be the same for the core 2 duo extreme, if i feel so inclined to spend that much?
And another question is heat generated, I know that the P4 generated MASSIVE ammounts of heat (i have a 3.4 ghz version). So the heatsink is HUGE and the main fan blows directly through it. So, will one of these higher end processors overheat with the current heatsink?
when it processor it all about socket model, in this case the socket is totally different and wouldn't work, you'll need a whole new motherboard... in short new system time!
