I put "computer" in brackets because emulators now permit many console games to be played on a computer. That said, please recommend both console and PC games. I loved FFT. The game was not perfect; no game is. Still, its systems stunned me into happiness, and I'd love to hear what else is out there that even remotely resembles its style. The only two games that I know of that come close to FFT are both on the original PS: 1. Battle Ogre Tactics and 2. Vandal Hearts. Both are pretty solid games, but I've played them enough already. I need fresh blood! So enlighten me, please. ;p

Have you played Shinning Force (sega)? Excellent game. It's an old Sega game so you will need the rom and a sega emulator.

For something a bit newer, try Silent Storm. It's set in WWII (not fantasy) but is kinda like those tactics games.

Fantasy Wars is also very good game, though I only played the demo.

King's Bounty: The Legend is an amazing game, I highly recommend that for you.

Are there emulators for PS2 and PS3 these days? I am so out of the loop when it comes to consoles in the past 5-10 years (the original PS was my final console before I became a PC zealot). Yes, I played SF on Sega. The game didn't do it for me. I found the battles to be exceedingly easy. I also didn't like how characters were already placed within a class; one of the greatest features of FFT was its party-building. You could mold a fresh recruit from a simple squire or chemist into any class in the game. It permitted maximum flexibility and customization to suit the player's style. King's Bounty was an interesting game. I just played it for the first time about 2 weeks ago. For its time, I bet it was groundbreaking. Playing it in 2009, I found it too shallow. I squeezed about 15 hours out of it before its simplified combat system wore out its welcome. Or is KB: The Legend a different game from the original KB on the Genesis? I'll certainly check out Silent Storm and Fantasy Wars.

It's a new game...and in my opinion one of the best games of last year.

let me echo the others and say kings bounty legend is an awesome game and if you are looking for some old school tactical srpg action it is the way to go.
