My computer keeps turning itself off at random points. Sometimes it won't even turn on properly to start with. I press the on button, it starts whirring and the power light is on, but all the monitor says is "No video input", as if I had only turned the screen on. Anyone know what causes this, and how I can fix it? ThanksBourbons3
Well I don't really understand 'the completely random part' in combination with the 'no video input' part... If it is somewhat random (i.e. sometimes in Windows, sometimes it won't reboot etc.) then it is probably a heat issue.. (and you could start cleaning the inside of your PC).
The 'no video' input could be anything related or not related to the previous problem; it could be a really overheated GPU (related but GPU are normally designed to be a lot hotter than the rest of your PC), a badly connected monitor, a monitor which is wrongly connected (there is a difference between the VGA and digital output;)), a faulty monitor etc.. Just try to eliminate some of these options by trying some of them.
Since it was not doing it before you installed the new RAM that likely is the culprit, faulty ram can reboot you. Power supply problems will do this as well, I would put overheating last on the list, usually you get graphics glitches with that as well.
How much ram did you add? What power supply are you using? Take the new RAM out and see if it still does it.
Either A) Ram is bad
B) Power supply was just enough before, now with added RAM was just enough to take it over the edge.
My guess.
I upgraded from 512mb to 1Gb. How do I find out about my power supply?Since it was not doing it before you installed the new RAM that likely is the culprit, faulty ram can reboot you. I just checked everything was plugged in and cleaned it all out. It had just turned froze after making lots of hissing and bleeping sounds. I installed new RAM about 3 weeks ago, but I don't remember the PC doing this at the time.Bourbons3
The bleeping sounds you mentioned above, could be important. If there is a pattern to them, when you boot-up, it could be the beep-code of your MB. If you remember the beeps, you can look up there meaning in your manual or the online manual for your MB. It can tell what the problem is !

Open the case and look at it. It is where you plug your power cord in, will be a 3 digit number with a "w" or watts at the end. Like "400w". Also like I said, take the ram you put in out and see if it continues. Might be the RAM. How did you figure out what to buy? I take it you guessed based on your level of PC knowledge?
it could be so many problems.
1. bad motherboard.
2. fan has gone out, and the pc shuts down to protect itself.
3. bad power supply.
4. loose connection.
5. virus

I bought a piece of RAM the same as the piece already in there. It turned on fine without the extra piece of RAM, but then it doesn't always have a problem with two pieces in there. The PSU is a Hipro, and says that depending on the voltage it has a maximum of 165 or 280w. I typed in the model number to google and didn't get anything useful.Bourbons3
Thats way too low. Time to upgrade

Holy crap. That is your problem. You need a new one, I imagine you don't have a super system so you could probsably get away with a 350w or 400w one. Not that I would normally recommend that, but I imagine if you had all kinds of money to buy new stuff you would not have what you have.

And any power supply with a higher wattage will work? It doesn't need to be specially compatible or anything? Please Log In to post.
