I want to upgrade my computer, so I want to buy a new graphics card. I dont want to upgrade to Vista now, but maybe later. I dont want to buy a very expensive card, maybe one around a $100. Should I do this or not? Will my graphics card work in the coming few years?? I want to play a game such as Crysis, but do I need a Direct X 10 compatible chip?? How expensive are Direct X 10 chips?? If I buy a graphics chip now, and upgrade to Vista later, will my graphics chip work with applications and games?? For replyers, thank you for your time and help.

Okay, we're going to need a lot more information than you've given us. What socket processor do you have? What slot do you have available for a graphics card? What is the maximum wattage of your power supply? Just how old is this machine anyway?

Hate to say it but your PC is AGP 4X, DX10 cards probably wont be available for you. Assuming that you gave us the right model number

you can get it but it would be a waste because the only good reason to get vista is for direct 10 or if your some buisness person

AGP 4x is an older solution to the problem of graphics cards requiring more bandwidth. It was succeeded by AGP 8x, and the new standard right now is PCI-e x16.

You can upgrade it a bit, but I doubt it will be worth your money. You're going to need a new machine.

No, most games from the next few years won't require directx 10. They will run fine on a (good) directx 9 card.

No of course not.  Like he just said it will be years before there will be a game that "will ONLY run on DX10"!  I would say every game through the end of 2008 will still also run on DX9.

There aren't any - releasing a game like that at this point in time would be sales suicide.

You're probably going to want to look at the X1650 Pro, 7600GS, X1650XT, or the 7600GT for AGP. You'll want a decent power supply though, I'd say at least 350 watts.

X1950XT for about $240, maybe not cheap but cheaper than 8800s.

The X1650Pro averages around $120, the X1650XT is usually around $170, 7600GS is also around $120, and the 7600GT is around $180. But they'll cost a lot more than that at Best Buy. Purchase your stuff online, at a place like Newegg, ZipZoomFly or Tigerdirect.

Another 512MB of RAM would definitely help out in most games - and out of the graphics cards I listed, and considering your machine, I'd pick whichever I could find cheapest out of those four. Most likely it will be either the X1650 Pro, or the 7600GS.

I dont think he is talking AGP, i mean he was talking about possible getting an 8 series card which is only PCI-e.  Of course the X1950XT is PCI-e too.

IMO, i really dont think you should invest any more money in that computer dude, very big waste, if you REALLY wanna play today's games on high for isntance, then go for the video card and stop there, start a fund for a new computer.
