would it work to hook my subwoofer up through my tv's regular line out?

and would there be any risk to my tv if I did?

Just a subwoofer? For one, I'd be surprised if it had a direct line-in meant for an output source. Also, the TV's speakers wouldn't work, and you'd just have your subwoofer to make sound from, which isnt' going to do well for anything other than bassy sounds.

Why? If the TV sounds crappy adding a sub is not going to fix it. All you will have is crappy sound with some bass. I don't think it will hurt the TV to use its line-out to drive a powered subwoofer. The other post may be correct - on some TV is you enable out the outputs it turns off the TV speakers. -k

This does not really work that way. You have to get some kind of A/V receiver. Reason being if you plug the subwoof into the line in you will not necessarily get an all bass track. If you have an A/V receiver, they have specific ports designed for subwoofers. Usually you can connect a TV (I am assuming HDTV) to an A/V receiver via an HDMI cable.
