Hey guys, I was considering a new mid-tower ATX case for my setup. My current one is pretty limited on cooling and only has a couple of old dusty USB ports on the front. I was considering this case because it has a nifty cover for the USB ports and what appears to be decent built-in cooling compared to my case setup and others I've seen. l like the simple design, but with flexibility for additional fans if desired. For ~$150 or under, could anyone recommend a case setup, with whatever additional fans you think would help for optimum cooling? I want something that'd adequately cool a 980GTX sli setup in the futue.

150$? that's probably the price for any premium case on earth.
A 100$ for that crap? WTF I've seen far better cases for 1/4 of that price
Look for NZXT Source 210, NZXT Phantom 410, Zalman Z3, 11, 12, 13 PLUS series, Corsair R series, Corsair SPEC series.
If you want something a little smaller you could go with Corsair Air 540.

For premium Corsair 450D.
I'll get the Corsair 450D, from what I've seen it looks really nice. My next question is - where should I move that rear exhaust fan to? My H80i is going to occupy the rear exhaust.
I'm still open for suggestions, probably won't pull the trigger until tomorrow.

Since you've picked premium I could recommend on another premium case from Corsair the 780T.
About your 2nd question: since the case is loaded with fans options, I'd move it to either bottom center slot as intake fan, or backside top as exhaust.
Here's a quick sketch:
the X markers should make my suggestions more clear to see to the eye
I've been using a Corsair 600t and for a mid-tower case it definitely gives you full-tower space. The outside vent covers get a tad bit dusty but I pop them off every other week and go to town on them with a duster and they're good as new again.

Awesome, thanks. I'm on the fence as to whether or not I should use that extra fan at all. If I move it to the top as exhaust I think that'd create negative case pressure, which I'm not sure is desirable in this setup. If I put the fan on the bottom then I'd have to clean the non-removable filter down there and I'm not particularly sure how beneficial that extra air pressure would be from that position. In other words, would using that extra fan noticeably help my temps at all or would it maybe be better to put it aside?

How about this: install your current H80i on either side on top as exhaust, also remove the rear exhaust fan that is included and place it next to your H80i cooler as top exhaust as well? I think this will give you pretty good airflow.
Usually the best case fans for dual GPU setup is two front intakes, two top exhaust and 1 rear exhaust
As you can see <
but then again if you want to use with lets say the best config with what you have I'd go with my last suggestion:
@KHAndAnime: I'm a bit biased with my Define R4, but take a look at the Fractal Design line. Nice, simple, and clean looking cases with a good amount of cooling options. The new R5 is only $119. I do like the simplistic Corsair cases too though.
I think I'll try it with the H80i in the back and the extra fan as exhaust at the front top. The reason for using the extra fan in the top front instead of top back is because the H80i, with its radiator and additional fan sticking to it, sticks out a good bit from the back and I think it'd obstruct the extra fan if it were in the top back. I'm a little hesitant to put the H80i so it's hanging upside down :p I think overall this might work best.

yeah this is the case i have also, i have the all black though. i love how it looks and there is plenty of room in it. love the tool free design.
Just pulled the trigger on the Corsair 450D. The recommendation and the review for [H] has me convinced that this is the way to go. I'm not super-excited about the case upgrade but who knows - maybe the better ambient temps will let my 980 GTX run faster before throttling down.
I realized my H80i isn't really cutting it for me in terms of cooling performance within the realm of noise I want. I noticed for decent cooling efficiency, I have to have the fans up to 1300+ RPM, which is actually pretty dang loud and very audible. I know I can upgrade the fans and that would give me better temps for less noise, but I'm thinking if I'm going to spend $50+ on fans for a newer cooler solution, why not spend a little more than double that and get an end-all solution that problem?
So, if I were to get this, I'd have to situate it on the top of my case. This would create a lot of outward air flow because of the 3x120mm fans, and there is only 2x140mm intake. Should I leave that rear fan on the 540D as exhaust or should put it on the bottom as intake as well?

With that Thermaltake Water 3 Ultimate, question is - are you going to install a CD drive?
you can see that this case got no CD drives, it's installed on the back.
I would leave it as on the picture, because the front fan of that Water 3 isn't going to affect much about ventilating the hot air from the GPUs.

I found a few people who have the 450D + Thermaltake and you have to take out the uppermost drive cage - leaving the single drive cage beneath it for access (which is all I'd need)
Also, my 980GTX's exhaust shoots out the back of the case, so there's not much I need to ventilate in that department.
Either way, further research led me to this...
...which I think would give me less problems and even better cooling, as well as an upgrade path towards GPU cooling so I can get my 980GTX in the liquid-cooling mix. Or maybe I'll hold out for the next Titan, sell the 980GTX, and get the Titan with the necessary components so perhaps I can unify the amount of noise coming from my system (while keeping things nice'n'cool). I'll post pictures when I get it all put together.
@PredatorRules Is there any solution you could recommend for connecting the fans inside the 450D to some sort of controller? I heard at 100% the fans are slightly noisy but they're a lot better if turned down a bit - so maybe I'll need something to control the fans.

I could recommend you on Corsair AF series, or Noctua NF; Good fan controllers are by NZXT Sentry 2, 3 and LX
May also want to check out the Corsair Carbide air series 540.. A very interesting design with alot of positive reviews.. Furthermore it is supposedly REALLY easy to work with. If your wondering where the PSU, hard drives and optical drives are, they are in the back portion behind the motherboard plate where there is a large compartment to hide said things..

I was looking at this case but it's definitely not up my alley - though I can totally see why for some people it would be. I know some users here like having big PC setups but honestly I don't have the space nor the necessity for the size. I think the Corsair 540D will be perfect for me. It's basically the smallest size I've seen a case get while retaining tons of enthusiasts options, efficient cooling, and the design is subtle, not geeky (for lack of better word), nor overstated. I'm never going to install more than a couple of videocards in my case, nor am I ever going to have a stack of hard drives, so a lean, efficient mid-tower is what I've been craving.
In fact, I ordered it a few days ago and it will be here tomorrow. Now I'm just waiting for my Datavac dust blower, NZXT Sentry Mix 2, Gelid GC Extreme Thermal compound, and my H-240X. That H-240X is supposed to be the best all-in-one cooler that I can buy, I'm hoping for an extremely cool and quiet setup.

I hope so, there's no reviews on that cooler, only the 220X module was reviewed and it was at the same level of the Corsair 100i, NZXT X41 and Noctua D15.

There's a couple, but Hitechlegion's is what convinced me to spend the extra $10
I've read a few people complaining that it's louder than the 220X under load but I think people are forgetting that the H240X simply has more cooling potential and capability of getting loud. If you actually match the volume of the H-240X and H-220X, the H-220X should be slightly cooler.
10 degrees cooler than the H100i at matched volume, and the H100i is moderate step up from what I have. Coming from my H80i, it should literally be night and day. Particularly with that Gelid GC Extreme Thermal Compound. I'm aiming for at least 20 degrees cooler than what I'm running now, which should net me a solid and quiet 4.3 Ghz. The cooling potential isn't nearly as good as I'd have hoped on my H80i without turning up the fans. Even at 50%, they're damn loud. I'm sure I could've spent $50 on fans which would've helped, but after doing research I realize the H80i isn't very good in the realm of all-in-one CPU coolers - and unfortunately they have rather limited lifespans ( with ~3 years before coolant goes bad).

10C cooler from H100i you won't get that I can promise, the most you'll get it 4-5C, the difference between the top high end water coolers are about 1-2C give or take between the modules and brands, the fact that Noctua D15 is on the same level as water coolers is even more phenomenal.

I don't see why not - it's documented right there in the graph. The simple fact of the matter is that the H80i and H100i coolers only work well when the included fans are turned up. Many people on [h] wouldn't consider the H80i or H100i anywhere near high end, nor would I. I don't like having very loud fans, so if I'm minding the volume level, then the H80i and H100i simply aren't great coolers. If the H240-X is running at max fan speed and matches the volume of the H100i running at ~50% fan speed, I'm not sure why it such a big difference would be hard to conceive. The H100i and H80i only do their jobs when the fans are turned up, greatly limiting their cooling potential in my case. Furthermore, these coolers are really cheap component-wise compared to what's in the H-220X and H-240X. Their components are made to last, and offer ability for additional GPU's and such. I don't see why they'd be super close to eachother in terms of cooling performance (per Db).
You could also take a look at FRACTAL DESIGN. I picked up the Define R4 and its a very high quality and silent case. Theres the newer R5 version which has some slight improvements i think.
It seems very similar to the Nanoxia Deep Silence Case, I wonder who copied who...

Because in your graph the difference between the H220X and the H240X is 1C difference but somehow Corsair get's 10C difference? not possible.

Your graph is showing the Corsair h100i running at insane fan speeds. Basically, nobody is going to get those temperatures from their H100i unless they don't mind their PC sounding like a vacuum cleaner. Unless the benchmark was all tuned to an exact dB rating, you can't make the comparison I'm trying to make. Under load, that shows the 220x has a 2.3 drop in degrees, and I'd project that the 240x would be a ~3.3 drop, but that's only in the situation where all of these coolers are running at max fan speeds. I'd never consider running the H80i or H100i on anything above 50% of their fan speeds because they're too loud. That's why there'd be a big difference.
That's also how I was misconceived in thinking that buying the H100i or H80i is a good idea. You aren't going to get temperatures anywhere resembling what most benchmarks show because they don't account for the fact that not everybody likes having their PC sound like a rocket every time they play a game.
@KHAndAnime Well they've actually replaced the stock Switftech fans into Noctua ones.
I would recommend you doing the same when you'll get yours.
That skews results a little bit then. I'm definitely considering Noctua fans when I sell off my H80i (already have an interested buyer). I almost got them on my H80i instead of going all-out on a new CPU cooler but I didn't see the point when this cooler will expire in a couple years anyways. Honestly at the moment, it seems like it should be cool and quiet enough out of the box. That video you posted really aggravates me though they didn't bother to document volume levels at all, which is like, the 2nd most important thing that should be documented when comparing coolers. And it would've been particularly helpful because I'd have loved to know how the fan switch helped the cooling performance and sound levels.

Hmm... Not sure what your talking about the Corsair 540 air is classified as a mid tower, in the same lines of the other towers your looking at.
Sorry to bump but I just wanted to say I got everything put together and it looks great. Unfortunately the 450D doesn't fit the H-240X with the optical drives in. My fan controller didn't fit either, so I literally took it apart so I just have the faceplate and the wiring - and that fits fine, but I need tape to keep it in place.
I'll put up pictures soon (before and after) but I'm busy and need to run errands. What I did want to mention though is that the H-240X cooler is absolutely night and day from my H80i. At 4.0 Ghz on my i7 930 I was idling at 50-55, and was hitting 75 when playing games - and that's with the fans turned up. With all my fans on minimum (850RPM), I'm idling at 33 and under load I didn't even go over 60 degrees. Hell, I have tons of additional overclocking room now. Even if I did want to turn up the fans, they don't get nearly as loud as my H80i fans did.
