Now let me start off by saying I'm a great fan of CRPG's, and honestly gave this one a chance, but ultimately, was turned off by various reasons by the time I reached the dwarves in the mountain.

First, the combat speed looked ridiculous, RIDICULOUS.

and second, the story felt REALLY uninteresting to me. Honestly, it just felt like a generic "Great evil being ressurected again, you are the sole hero who can stop it". Perhaps there is more to the story, but honestly, by the time I got to the dwarves I was too tired to find out.

Anyway, I'm really considering now to reinstall the game and give it another go, this time playing as a mage build, since I've been reading a book (Johnothan Strange and Mr. Norrel), which has a somewhat similar setting and revolves around 2 magicians.

I was wondering if anyone could link me to some great mods/usermade patches that will greatly enhance the gameplay experience so that it might be more enjoyable.

I'm on the phone, so my responses may seem a bit abrupt. :P

You can make the combat turn-based in the options menu.

From what I've played...no, there's not much more to the story.

I never got into it, but these days I would like to. Unfortunately I lost my copy and now it is like $100 on amazon.com and other sites like that. Just goes to show that you should keep your games, you never know when you are going to want to play them again.

Edit: Just checked amazon.com and it isn't expensive... might check it out.

yeah Ive playied through it a few times... It is not as deep as Fallout, but if you liked fallout you almost owe yourself to play through this game, especialy later on, the game gets interresting.

My main problems with the game, is that steampunk never got a hold in me, and the magic vs tech, is really unballanced, magic is way stronger.

there are some twists and turns in the story, but nothing you wont sense long before it happens.

what did make an impression is all the ways you can progress through the game. Alot of people have information that can be useful.

In the End I completed Arcanum twice, once when I bought it, and once judt before I bought a new pc. You wont remember it as one of the best roleplaying games ever, but it is decent filler untill games like Fallout 3 (I hope) comes along.

I bought, played, and really wanted to like Arcanum. The magic vs. technology environment and the steam punk vibe really appealed to me. And at the time, a lot of people were talking about how great the game was. GS rated it a 7.3, and that was back in the day when you could halfway trust a GS rating.

But I've come to realize that most of the accolades came just because there was such a lack of RPGs at that time. Much better RPGs existed before Arcanum and have been released since. The plot was annoying and trite. I spent the whole game looking and waiting for the "big twist" that would make the plot anything other than run-of-the-mill, and I have to tell you, I'm still looking.

FYI, my first time through was with a technologist, and I wasn't able to finish. I did finish with a near-pure mage build. I must not have had anything better to play that month.

I made a start on Arcanum. I loved Bloodlines and my friend who got me into Bloodlines is pretty much in love with Arcanum. I finally gave in and bought it a few weeks ago, but I didn't get very far into it before I lost my save.

I'm gonna get back into it at some point, it seems like an awesome game - but it's kinda hard to play. Not difficult, just... oppressive.

I played Arcanum way back in the days before TV stole my imagination away, and I had a blast with it. I loved the steampunk vibe and one of my favorite things to do was to creep in windows and loot the buildings. I had never played a game that allowed that before. However, I didn't bother to finish the game on that first playthrough either. I had a blast with it, but my attention wandered. I'm scared that if I play it again it won't seem like nearly as wonderful an experience, so I don't think I will. Good times.
