I am wanting to get either BFBC 2 or CoD Black Ops for PC. My fear is that as a console gamer I will get totally OWNED online because of my lack of experience with the M/KB set up. At this point can I have fun with an online FPS like this or will the frustration of getting smoked for a while be too much to bear? I hear all of you guys preach about FPS's being so much better on PC because of the M/KB set up and I also figure there will be alot less screaming, whining 9 year olds or pubescent 18 year old (Im a bad mofo behind this TV gangsta wanna be's) on the PC version of CoD BO than on XBOX 360.

Well, if you are just wanting to get your feet wet into using KB/M in online games, try online FPS demos to see how you feel about it? Try Unreal Tournament 3 demo, FEAR Combat, America's Army, etc.

You can always try Combat Arms. It's a shooter much like Call of Duty and it's free to play and download.

I completely expect you to get your arse handed to you for a while until you grow accustomed to the kb/m setup. I remember I did when I first played on PC. You will get use to it though. That's just how it is with any new input controls.

Play through the single player before you go online, it won't take too long to get use to it.

First of all, wise choice. I still love my consoles, but in the past few months have realized how much more awesome PC gaming can be if you have a good system.

If you are worried about getting owned, I wouldn't stress about it too much. Just like I was trying to get used to FPS on the consoles (I still think I never got fully used to it). It will just take practice to get good. Even PC players that have been doing KB+M for years get owned in online FPS if they dont practice often, so its the old saying "practice makes perfect". Try to set your starting expectations low so you dont get frustrated and know it will get better the more you play.

Also, you could spend some time playing single player FPS to get used to the controls. I found this to be one of the best ways. If you need games, Steam in partciular will have some amazing sales starting in about 3-4 weeks and lasting until early January. You will probably be able to pick up a ton of amazing games in the $5-10 range.

Cod has perfect control, so people do extremely fast and accurate things. It is wise that you start by playing and easy singleplayer fps to learn how to play.

Combat arms? Its nothing like call of duty. The guns work like counter strike and suprisingly it has more complex weapon mechanics than fps in the market.

So would you suggest starting playing some great SP experiences like Crysis or Half Life 2 to get the hang of the M/KB set up?

Here is what i suggest Start with Quakelive. Its free it has a large online population, little 12year olds screaming and there is a latter. The game gives you a test and ranks you and then it finds matches for your level ( of course you can still choose manually your level and you can play games from higher level than your for more points or matches with people with a lower level than you but the points you earn arent alot

Yeah, but its more of a preference. If you don't mind trial and error there's no need to buy those games (but you should buy HL2 and episodes anyway since its great), but certainly those games will get you accustomed to the setup if you have extra cash to spend.

expect it to take a week or two to get comfortable with the controls if you play a bit every day.

and it is not just the controls that differ...it is the whole way you control your guy too. In console games you sort of drift your crosshairs over to the enemy; on PC, you simply put your crosshairs on the enemy.

Start by playing through single player campaigns to get the feel for the new controls. Watch a few videos on youtube of good players to see the differences in how people play FPSs on the PC as opposed to consoles. Learn essential techniques such as cirlcle strafing. And yes, you will get pulverized online for some time until you get used to the setup. Most every game has a few "noob" servers available for you to cut your teeth in; I'd recommend starting there.

It doesn't take long to get used to it, atleast not for me. If I were to switch to console gaming now it'd probably take about a week and I'll be pwning people =)

Esoteric

Wisest advice here, TF2 was just on sale so it kinda sucks you may have missed it, but if you don't own it The Orange Box it is better. TF2 is AMAZING fun and is COMPLETELY noob friendly. TF2 is a great game that can take skill but if you are new you will at least feel a little satisfied with your performance. I couldnt recommend a better game for someone who is nervous with their m/kb performance. If you did get BFBC2 or CoD, I really do presume the learning curve will be too big a jump, you will die every 10 seconds for reasons unknown in your case, lol.

Don't worry about easing yourself in. Everyone is better at aiming but so will you be after some practice. I bought MW2 on 360, ended up getting it on PC a little while later and realized what I was missing :) So I'm definitely not making th same mistake for Black Ops.
or the one im currently using.... Rahnyc4
How do you like that, anyway? I was thinking of buying one.

I wouldn't worry about controls, you'll get used to it sooner rather than later. Everyone usually becomes very decent with it coz its easy to learn the M/KB combo. For a starter tip though, finetune mouse speed till you get what feels most natural for you. Some perform better with higher mouse speed, some lower. Its a little different for everyone. After you are used to the controls, you prolly realised that your own knowledge with a game's maps become a lot more significant. The way people move, frequent camping spots, where to expect enemies etc etc and how to exploit them.

It will take you some time to get good/competitive in online matches.

Start with single player and get a feel for M&K. There will be frustration but you can get over with time practice, practice and more practice. ;)

Another great populated game is CS:S and COD4. Black ops should be good but i would wait if i were you to make sure the community stays strong and has good servers. And dont worry about sucking that bad..you wont get messages saying "HAHA YOU ARENT KEWL 3NUF 2 B L33T!! ROFLZ!!" because your with big boys now lol

PC FPS online matches are much more difficult than console ones even if you're competent with the M/KB setup. One reason for that is that with controllers you have auto-aim leveling the field for everyone. Even if your aim isn't great you can still find yourself hitting people more often than not thanks to auto-aim compensating for you. As a result, there's a smaller gap in performance between great players and bad ones. With M/KB though there is no auto-aim and the mouse is MUCH more precise than an analog stick, which means that good aim is rewarded much more in PC FPS games and bad aim is punished much more severely. There are also a significant amount of PC gamers who have a tendency to stick to a particular game for a long amount of time, whereas nearly all console gamers tend to move on to the newest big release. The result is that the longer a game has been out for PC, the harder it will be for you to compete. Don't even think of trying to pick up a game like UT2K4 or CounterStrike, for example, where most people still playing those games have been doing so since the start of last gen. Expect to get your ass handed to you online for the first few months you play. You can mitigate this though by getting used to M/KB first by playing single player FPS games/modes. Also be sure to adjust your mouse sensitivity to something that feels natural for you, and be aware that what feels natural to you is going to change as you get better (IIRC I started out with mouse sensitivity usually set to something like 10% and now I'm usually around 50-75% in most games). It's totally worth all this effort though, and once you get used to M/KB controls you'll never want to go back to using controllers.

I recently moved to PC gaming. It took a bit to get used to the mouse and keyboard, but I've fallen in love, and you probably will too once you get used to it. The increased sensitivity is nice and I find I'm much more precise with aiming.

I remember when I finally got a gaming rig and started playing pc shooters. Good times. Yea those were the days as said by all others once you put the time and effort you will feel rewarded when you pull some wtfbbq shots you never thought was capable of being done back in your console days, I know I did. I don't play shooters as often anymore busy with rl stuff but I yearn to return so much fun and way more competitive. All I play now is Fallout:NV when I get the time.

Try a simpler game first. UT3 is so easy to play, it's basically the walking keys plus the mouse, perfect to get to grips with the setup. And the AI bots provide a great challenge. You can then move in to TF2, another game thas doesn't require that much on the keyboard side. You can then move to 'regular' shooters with all those ctrl and alt keys, f1 and f2, etc.

Welcome to PC gaming. As a multi-platform gamer myself (mainly PC gamer), I can easily tell you, you made the right choice to start PC gaming. Between BFBC2 and MW2, I will have to say BFBC2 because it's a matter of preference. I prefer the teamplay with different roles like recon, medic, engineer, assault. The maps in BFBC2 are on a large scale, using vehicles, anti-vehicle weapons, and combat. MW2 does have modes with teamplay but overall, they're more fast-paced run and gun style, which isn't bad either!

Like I said before, it's a matter of preference. You should try out both games and see for yourself. Graphically, they run on totally different engines so they're totally unique to one another. I can say that BFBC2 is a breath of fresh air because it's probably the only FPS military modern warfare game that does everything it can to be original and stand apart from MW2. It does just that and it's a remarkable game. Very satisfying.

Uh This is silly you complain about screaming kids yet i have a feeling your one of them. If getting owned is going to bother you so much then why are you playing games? A lot of it is about the challenge just play unranked matches if you care so much about your stats. You r going to get even more stressed on the PC mate people can make immpossible shots look like child play but just go with it and learn. .

Word of advice, if you run into some 12 year old snots on some newer games, remember that just comes with the popularity. When people say PC has a better community than consoles, what they really mean is you have more people in it for the long haul. After the young 'uns move onto the newest thing, you'll be left with the more mature folk. And the beauty of PC gaming is, those communities last a long, long while.

Sometimes you'll get the elitist ***** but dealing with him usually beats the hell out of the pre-pubescent jerk xXCODPROSNIPAHXx any day of the week.

And they think it's really cool to kill low ranked players because they have 5 stars on their insignia pin with the number 50 on it. I am an achiever! :P Seriously, all new players have to start from rank 0 or 1. I know it's unavoidable but just try to not let them ruin your fun, TC.

This is my simplest explanation, play online fps on PC when your in the mood to be in concentration, m+kb will ultimately lead to extremely accurate enemies (harder gameplay) When you come home from work and cant be bothered, play the same game on your console
