- This isn't a System Wars post

- I've posted in the PC section for a reason

So I was at my local EB Games today. I went to exchange my XBOX360 for a PS3 since all my friends play FIFA12 on PS3.

I started talking to the guy there and he said we wouldn't see a PS4 until late 2014. The thing is he said, that right now the PS3 is only pushed to 70% from it's maximum performance. Most games, he said, don't push the PS3 past the 50% mark and some go to 60%-70%.

So I started wondering, could this be true?

Could games not push the hardware as hard as it would go? Same as most games don't push PC Hardware?

Is this why the graphics on PS3 are lower compared to PC?

Thoughts?

PS: off-topic, but does anybody know if it's possible to chat with PS3 friends on Windows?

No. There is no way he would know that and he was just making stuff up. It is true that they probably aren't completely 100% utilized all the time. If they were, then it would system crash a whole lot more anytime some system function needed to be done. The graphics are lower quality because the component parts are lower performance.

It might be technically true but it's not likely to actually mean that we're likely to see an increase in game quality. The best looking games on the PS3 today are very much pushing the envelope of what the machine can do in one way or another. I wouldn't be that surprised to learn that the average game left the machine with a little extra juice but that's the same on all platforms, only a few games really pushes the machine to its full potential.

The second issue is that in order for a game to run it has to meet several parameters. Just because the CPU is running at 50% capacity doesn't mean that you're not using 100% of the RAM or the GPU.

In short, we're not going to see dramatic changes to the way Xbox360 and PS3 games look, we might see a gradual increase in the overall quality, but games like God of War, Uncharted 2-3 and Gears of War 3 are still going to be among the best looking titles a couple of years from now.

Yeah I agree with both your posts. No one knows about the chat thing? It's a pain to turn on the PS3 just to chat with someone.

Look at the ps3 exclusives released in the last 2 years or so. They all look the same quality wise these days for a reason.

His logic was that a next gen console isn't released until the current gen one hit 100%?

Dafuq?

And in any case, no, he's wrong. ND have released the best looking PS3 games and they said they maxed it out.

This topic has been discussed for ages. Whether the power of the cell (PS3) is being used to its maximum. They kept saying that it was almost max and every year after that, better looking, graphics intensive games like Killzone 2, 3, Uncharted 2, 3 kept coming out. But you can bet your horses that's about the best it will get seeing as how the jump from Killzone 2 to 3, and Uncharted 2 and 3 looked basically the same. I'd say that's a good representative of consoles reaching its max performance. Gears of 2 and 3 look the same, even so much Epic had to add more of a color palette to make it seem like the graphics improved. At the core, they're the same. If I were a console only gamer, I would want next gen consoles to be out by the end of 2013.

It's possible, considering developers develop for the lowest common denominator now a days (likely the 360). However, it's more likely that consoles have hit their limit and that Microsoft/Sony are perfectly content milking their current generation consoles. There's no reason to release a new console, since they make more money off game sales than console sales.

Hi there, I'm a guy that works at EB. I say that the consoles are only using 20% of there total maximum performance. I must be correct in saying this. Ugh, why do you even talk to people that spew this crap?

Oh, and to be able to chat with your PS3 friends via Windows, all they need to do is install Linux onto their PS3's. :)

I wasn't talking to him.

He offered extended warranty on the PS3 ($40) for an extra 2 years which I declined saying the PS4 will probably be out by then.

When he heard this he went into "babble" mode and started praising the PS3 which included this 70% comment.

I was just like, "give me the damn thing already, my old Pentium 4 could kick this PS's ass"...

New programming optimizations become common place over time, so of course more can be squeezed out of the same hardware. Personally I look forward to the next generation of consoles getting rid of many of the sort of people that don't belong on PC(and are only here because of graphics rather than kb + mouse, open platform, all the pc exclusive games, mods, freedom/control, multi tasking, etc).

I'm looking forward to next-gen as well. I think I'll end up playing more on the consoles than I do now, but remain primarily a PC gamer as usual. It'll be interesting. I love my exclusives so I always buy consoles too.

What's wrong with being a PC gamer cause of graphics? We do have the best visuals.

Imho, nothing is wrong with it. :D My only concern is that I hope next-gen won't hold back the PC as much as this gen. We'll see. :)

Thing is, PS3 is not the PS2, so as soon as the PS4 is out that will be the end of the PS3 even if Sony keeps supporting it. I'm PS number one fan, but honestly all that fanboy talk that Sony kept supporting the PS2 long after the PS3 was out is just not entirely true. They kept making yes, but GOW2 was the last big thing on the PS2 and what was in 2007. I won't go as far out as saying they'll do the same as MS to the original Xbox (thanks for that btw, i miss my original Xbox) but i think it most probably happen like i said, it will just tumble down and be forgotten pretty quick. It will probably be remembered best as the most hated console of all times xD

Every time I hear this kind of talk I always think of kids talking about Dragon Ball. "But Goku was only at 50% power, he could still go super sayen 3 waaaaah". Anywho, yes it's very probable that we still haven't seen the best looking games on consoles. However, any relatively cheap gaming pc can produce better graphics (especially when you factor resolution) than a console this generation ever will. Hope I didn't come off as fanboyish (I own all consoles), but I believe it to be the truth.

You can't just describe it like that, you can't just say the game is only using 70% of the power or something, that isn't how it works. You can have an absolutely terrible game that runs at an abysmal framerate and that game can have 100% usage, and you can have games that look great like Uncharted 2 that also use the hardware to the max. It depends on the efficiency of the code. Anyone who says something like what your EB guy said haven't the slightest idea what they are talking about.

Exactly. I often get higher FPS in BF3 on ultra than I do in PVP in SWTOR. And it's obvious which one looks better and is more of a technical marvel.

Since this guy is working retail we can safely assume he has no clue about what he is talking.

Usually the argument implicates efficiency. When someone says "Developers aren't using 100% of the consoles power", they're referring to the fact that developers are still finding ways to optimize their game engines for PS3/360 hardware, which to them means it's "using more of the console's power". It's silly I know.

Even if it's true I don't think that PS3 at 100% performance can compete with the Wii-U or the 720, at least graphically. But who cares, we are PC gamers.
