What is a good contrast ratio for gaming? 3000:1 or should i have at least 10000:1?

Or plain old what is the average contrast ratio for a hd t.v?

This is tricky because every company advertises using different standards. Some use the straight up contrast ratio while others use "dynamic" contrast which means that when the measure the contrast, they mess with the backlight to get a wider range. Generally, go for the highest contrast ration you can get. If it is actual contrast, the number will probably be in the single thousands but dynamic will say anything from 10000 to sometimes millions. Contrast ratio is fairly important when it comes to gaming. On a tv with a bad contrast ratio, lots of detail is lost in dark areas and the colors are less impressive. Definitely go for the best you can afford, you'll be glad you did!

Contrast ratio is very important, it will define how black your blacks are, which will make all the difference in your picture. read lots of reviews, Im glad I did when I bought my plasma. I ended up spendning a littel extar and getting a 30,000 static, 1,000,000 dynamic ratio set and the picture is amazing, so much better than my friends cheaper plasma. sites like lcdbuyinguide and AVSF should be very helpful to you.

This is a very important point. Every manufacturer has different standards for contrast ratio. Often a low tier brand like Vizio advertises a higher contrast ratio than Samsung. But the samsung will have a better picture every time.

Until IEEE or ISF set some common standard, you are best off ignoring contrast ratio... best to go into a store and make direct comparisons!
