I have been looking into buying a monitor from newegg but I dont understand what the contrast ratios mean. There is anything from 500:1 to 1000:1, what ratio should I try to get?

The higher, the better. I'd shoot for at least 600:1, but with 1000:1 units being as cheap as they are these days, at least 800:1 doesn't seem too unreasonable.

Yeah, I'd say 800+ is fine.

Higher contrast ratios typically mean blacker blacks, which is very important on an LCD because of light seepage from the backlight that is noticeable (especially in the corners of the screen when sitting directly in front of it) and can be annoying.

basically higher contrast ratio=better picture, i say get 800:1 ratio, also beware if you see 2000:1 ratio its dynamic and not static. Everything should be measured in static and dynamic is a marketing ploy.

^you might wana up the video card to a 640mb GTS because there is no point in getting a 20inch monitor with a 8600. If need be lower the cpu budget a little to get a better card.
