Specifically, heatsinks and fans - air cooled (though water cooled solutions fit the definition). They come in different shapes and sizes. Do you recommend one? Are they a necessity or a luxury? Which dissipates heat most efficiently? Fan of Artic Freezer Pro 7, a Zalman, Tuniq tower, etc?
i have an arctic freezer 7 pro, and my e8400 never gets above 51 degrees celsius at max load so i would say that is a very safe bet, but ive heard good things about the other ones you mentioned as well
Thermalright ultra 120 extreme is the best heatsink avaible. It doesn't come with a fan though, but usually you replace the fan that comes with the heatsink with a high performance fan. The noctua NH-U12P is up there also. If you don't care about price, get the thermalright with a scythe kaze ultra, you're guarantted pretty much the best air cooling out there with that (if you don't care about noise either).

Has anyone had any issue with the cpu heatsinks or fans if their memory also has heatsinks? I was warned that some coolers would block the memory slots and could be problematic if your memory has heatsinks (like OCZ Reapers). Any thoughts?

this guy doesnt have any problems, this is off the rate my rig thread. hes got this cooler which id recomend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233005 his may be the 120mm version but its not that much difrence

"Your milage may vary" is all I can say. If the DIMM slots are too close to the CPU bracket and/or the cooler extends too far over the bracket mounts, then there might be an issue. Some mobos are better for this job than others. Don't forget, though, that LGA755 cooling brackets are square, so heatsinks can be turned 90 degrees if it provides for a better fit or better aerodynamics.
Idk how long the arctic cooling 5 lasts, I think around 3 years, of coures you may want to apply some after a year or two. The mx-2 is slightly better because temps go down 2-3 celsius. It wont make a real difference if you wanted to upgrade to mx-2.
