I'm thinking either Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 ($319), or Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache ($165).

Which would be the better choice? Should I wait a year or 2 then upgrade to quad when they're cheaper or someting?

quad core's are overrated. Most games do not even use all of the cores so its kinda of a waste at the moment.

There are some games that benefit from Quads, but you well get a good experience from the dual as well. I would get the Quad if you do a lot of multi-tasking in Windows, video editing, sound mixing/authoring etc... CAD, Photoshop etc...

If you are an overclocker though there is no reason not to get a cheap one and overclock it to hell and back!

Yeah, except don't get the Q9300, you need a really good board to get that one up to speed, very low multiplier, I know, I can't push it past 3.33GHz. I have the FSB at 444! Voltage is a bit higher than I'd like, but it's stable. Go for one with a higher multiplier, they do take some work to overclock but they do OC very well.

Very true if you're an overclocker, but I got my Q9300 for free, so no complaints here. I'm glad I didn't cheap out on the board and got it as high as I did.

Also remember that you can't compare cache size 1:1 (in terms of performance comparison of course) going 65nm to 45nm. The Q9300 only has a 6MB cache vs the Q6600's 8MB, but the Q9300 is still faster clock for clock.

Hmm i'm sure i saw someone with over 4ghz on air :? I say go for the moment, E73/7400 can also hit 4ghz, that's bang for the buck. I doubt you'll even "need" a Quad core this year.................

Your living in the past friend, Yes dual core is better for most games, but think about it, aren;t you gonna be using that CPU one year from now? two years from now? Think about the games of 2009 and 2010 when your buyin your CPU and you will definitely need quad core.

And in 2010 we'll have 6 or 8 cores with SMT that are faster clock for clock, plus whatever other standards come out so you'll want to upgrade your motherboard anyway. Dual core, quad core, the way i see it is you'll end up upgrading anyway. If you got a Pentium D or Athlon X2 when they just came out you ended up upgrading so your new GTX280 isn't bottlenecked and guess what, games haven't really needed dual cores yet either.

QUAD CORE!!!!

Yeah maybe games don't use them NOW, but by the end of next year many more titles will use 4 cores and it will be a waste to buy an old C2D now. For multitasking aswell, it will be far better.

Although, for even CHEAPER than the quad core, why not get the absolute latest tech:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

Its the new i7 and it's only $294, its a very fast CPU for many apps and awesome for SLI gaming.

You can get it on air though. My e8400 is at 4.2ghz. If I had a better mobotherboard/heatsink it would be 4.5ghz +

That may be true, but take note that similar systems with dual-cores will be even more obsolete due to not having those two extra cores. How frequently do you upgrade? If you want to retire it when the next big thing hits the market, you might as well opt for a cheaper dual-core and overclock it. If you want your system to last for a while before making any major system overhauls (read: motherboard, CPU, and RAM replacement), you might as well pay up a bit for the Q9550 and stick with it for two or three years.

I wont be paying $300 for a cpu, so for me it's either the E8500 or the 4Q6600, both in same price range.

This is a good point. By the time Alan Wake and other quad supported games come out, wont the new video cards then bottleneck quads? Is a q6600 still worth it now?

How do you overclock? i hear lots of talk about it but no one ever desrcibes whats involved.. I'm having pretty much the same predicament, in choosing between core2duo and quad, if OC is relatively easy then i might go for a quad.

Nowadays, it's just raising your FSB in the BIOS gradually and testing stability with each change. If it's unstable and the CPU isn't running too hot, raise the Vcore gradually until it becomes stable, or back off on your overclock if your CPU starts overheating. It's not too complicated when you get the hang of it, especially when you factor that people used to overclock their computers back in the day by replacing CPU clock oscillators/crystals with a bit of soldering and hoping that said CPU didn't fry in seconds.

Quad core @stock 2.4GHz blasts through any game but even a 3.6Ghz dual core E8400 is lagging with GTAIV. Many games in 2009 will be Quad core optimised. A dual core will result in less detailed game or lower frames.

It is very easy to overclock the Q6600 but you will need a good heatsink/cooler not the stock heatsink and fan.

I don't think there's a person here that will say they don't love their Q6600. It is still relevent because of the expenses and minimal performance increases of the i7s. I don't see why buying a Q6600 today would be a bad choice, especially considering its cheap and with a good heatsink can easily get up to around 3.4 ghz.
