I don't know much about the tech stuff, but my friend has a Celeron and he says it's the best stuff for the money.

Phenom II X4 940 if your board will support AM2+ processors. I upgraded from a 6400+ and the 940 performs better all around.

I'm not one to discuss this "future proofing" issue. I don't believe it's exactly possible. Seeing that your board doesn't support Phenom II processors, either up to an AM3 board or i7 if you really feel the need to upgrade. I wouldn't put out the cash for an AMD quad that isn't a Phenom II.

Hi Well if you have to change your board, you may as well get an AM3

board. It all depends how urgent you want to upgrade. Intel is coming

out with i5 but it is a different socket than i7. The i5 prices are supposed

to be lower. If you want to upgrade sooner, get the AM3 board and one of the

new Athlon II dual cores. That would be cheap and it would run well. You

could always put a Phenom II quad in later when the prices go down.

There is no such thing as future proofing a pc. How much money are you willing to spend. you could get this. mobo ($85) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128392 Cpu ($103) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680 Then, if you ever felt the need for a quad core, you could upgrade the cpu to a phenom II 955, and this will work with that mobo. I actually have that mobo and the 955, and I am very satisfied.

A well-overclocked Dual Core will do that job perfectly if thats what you're looking for, will save yourself lots of money too. If you're insisting on one of those two then personally Id go for the Quad seeing as more games being released are finally taking advantage of the 4 cores.

I would go phenom 2 955, with the am3 socket, te socket 775 is a dead end, at least you know am3 sockets will still be coming out next year.
