A friend of mine recently bought Star Wars: Battlefront II, and I enjoyed it so much I bought the PC version. I've also recently been playing the Quake Wars open beta and I can't help but notice the similarity of QW's objective-based gameplay and SW:BF2's campaign mode.

However, SW:BF2 shines in comparison on the control scheme. QW still suffers from the problem that Doom3 and many other FPS games suffer from: having to cycle through your weapons to arm and throw grenades. I also find the fact that you must "verify" (press the "primary fire" button to actually switch) your weapons when cycling.

It seems that Battlefront II got it right on the controls and on the objective-based combat (even though only the campaign is objective-based). Is it just me, or is having to cycle to grenades and click to arm them before you can throw them extremely annoying? Personally, I like FEAR, Far Cry, and SW:BF2's method of having a seperate key to throw grenades. It makes things a lot easier, IMO, during hectic online battles.

Any opinions on what games Quake Wars could learn from to make its gameplay better? Do you guys enjoy the objective-based missions? ANy opinions on SW: Battlefront II?

I didnt get a chance to get into the beta test but any FPS game Ive played since Quake 2 Ive always bound a key for each weapon, or weapon type. Ie: one key for primary weapon one for grenades one for secondary one for melee.. Why on earth would you stick to the default scroll menu? Can't you bind weapons to keys in QW?

Quake wars is so... so bad.Zaeryn

Making a judgement call on a game that isnt even released yet doesnt make any sense. Its called BETA for a reason.

doesnt matter if its not out yet, ive been in other betas before and not much changes from beta, to the games release, and being in the quake wars beta I would have to agree and say that this game feels, plays, and is crap in comparision to battlefield and even battlefront

Well, i played too the Quake Wars Beta and the weapons cycling isnt that bad, is very basic indeed, ok, you got it right in the part of the verify by left-clicking to choose a weapon, but you do that if you use the mouse scroll, so thats why every weapon has a number assigned (similar to Battlefield and Counter Strike games), so your main weapon is the 3, so, simply press the 3 key and you equip fast and automatically your main weapon, or you want the melee knife or strogg arm, then simply press the 1 key to equip it automatically and fast.

On the grenade part, well, you got right too, but cmon dont be lazy, you only have to get used to press the 4 key (grenades) and then left-click (shoot), but im with you on the grenade throwing with one key.

I didnt get what you say about the objective-based missions comparison you make between Quake Wars and SW: Battlefornt 2. But i know that SW: Battlefront 2 is a conquest game or a objective based on capturing command posts (just like Battlefield), and then you got Objective based mission on Quake Wars that can be different and variable, like destroy, hack and construct, they are completely different but both are great. So on, i played the Quake Wars BETA and i think is fine, or good, i enjoy all of its features and army clases, but i get just a little bored because is just one map. I remember that i had a really great fun experience with Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, cuz when your team and enemy team follows and try to acomplish their main objectives, the battles get really fun and intense, thats why it has so much players whose are still playing it, or you want to check it out?, well here you got http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/

Oh, yeah, you can bind the keys. But, here's how the weapons cycling works: When you cycle through your weapons you must press the "primary fire" button to finalize the selection, otherwise you don't switch weapons. (using the numeric keys does a "quick swicth", though) My problem lies in that I don't like having to switch to grenades in order to throw them. I like FEAR's method of being able to press "g" to throw grenades, even when you have you guns selected and equiped. I used SW: Battlefront II as an example because SW:BF2 has controls similar to FEAR's, yet is an MOFPS like Quake Wars.

I don't think Quake Wars is bad, I actually thoroughly enjoyed the beta. Sure, the textures are limited in the beta, but its a beta and the download is only ~800MB (and the install is roughly 800MB too). I really liked the objectives (there are primary and secondary objectives), as it creates a central point for the combat. The sides seem well balanced and the vehicles are powerful, yet (unlike Battlefield 2) the vehicles are reasonably easy to take out using ground troops. I just wish there was a "throw grenade" key, instead of having to switch to grenades. Perhaps Splash Damage will chnage this. I hope so!

Anywho... thanks for the responses, everyone!

I'm loving the quake wars beta also, I haven't had this much fun in a multiplayer shooter in a long time.

lol

Yeah, I know I'm quibbling about something that is (relatively) minor. I got used to it, but I really miss being able to throw grenades on the fly. I rebound the cycle to "e" (I do with all FPS games, as it's close to the "WASD" setup and my mouse-wheel is kind of overly sensitive). I did eventually get used to having to press 4 for grenades and pressing 3 to switch back to primary, but I really wish Splash Damage would consider having a "throw grenade" key. An, yeah, I agree that playing only one map (and only aspect of that map (GDF attack, Strogg defend)) got kind of boring, but it shows a lot of promise, IMO.

As for SW:BF2, the multiplayer is command post capturing, but the single player campaign is more objective-based. IE; Capture this post, destroy generators, defend this area for 5 minutes, wipe out turrets, capture plans and then return to dropship. That's more of what I meant, not the "cpature and hold command posts" aspect of multiplayer.

-edit- thanks for the link, BTW! (can't believe I forgot that!) Never played Wolf:ET, don't know why. I think I'll have to finally check it out. :D

The thing about IDs games is that they are pretty versatile and custamizable (not a real word). You may be able to wright a script in your conifg file to have a button both select and throw grenade with one button. Not sure though. Any one who compares this game to BF2 doesnt understand Quake at all.
