I was owning it up in FEAR and then decided to play some CSS for a while and man! I die in like one hit, it seems like everyone either has the most advanced gaming mouse on earth or they are using some program that automatically lock onto my head. I even got shot THRU the wall a few times! If I try and take it slow I get sniper by some guy running 20 miles per hour while jumping in the air. It's ridiculous.

#1 don't expect to own at a game that you have never played before

#2 Try going on different servers, many servers have tons of hardcore people, while others are more laid back. The server you were on probably didn't have any admins so hackers could get on.

#3 I was very good player, I don't play much anymore, but it takes pratice to get. I played the game about 2 years before I got as good as I am now.

get used to the game and try playing on servers running Cs_office and de_dust2. they're the most popular maps and are easy to get used to. it'll take time but once you're better it's a blast

In CS sound is the most important factor.

Use crouch/walk a lot when enemies are near. I can easily headshot people through walls just by hearing their foot steps. If you're silent, you can actually surprise people.

It's not an "action" shooter as much as it is a "tactical" shooter. IE use cover, fire in two or three shot bursts, cover flank attacks, etc.

Rule #1 dont play source. Rule #2 play 1.6. Source is a money pusher for valve and was dumbed down from 1.6 so tons of noobs to CS wouldnt get rocked like they do when they first try 1.6. Over all the hitboxes are rediculous. Spray is rediculous. Skills necessary are minimal. Thats why if you look at the steam content usage nowa day everyone is going back to 1.6 because it doesnt suck. Want proof that people are moving back to 1.6 and im not just making it up. here: straight from the valve server

Counter-Strike -------------players:107,753---servers:65,275----minutes played: 6.614 billion
Counter-Strike: Source-----players:54,859----servers:42,072----minutes played:1.874 billion

... the difference is truely staggering noting that from every HL and HL2 game and mod and these games included total minutes played is 7.897 billion.

Basically I disagree with you comment that source is too hard. And at the same time i suggest playing a game that is more fun and more enjoyable and over all ... better. :P

Hahaha, Counter-Strike Source was easy. There was never a time when I played and didn't get the best score on in the pub. This is from day 1.

EDIT: And the guy above me is a ditz about this. Hating CS:S is a 3 year old fad, and while I agree CSS is a cash cow, it still is much better than 1.6. Maybe if 1.6 was 1.3 then you'd be right, but it has shields and that's saying enough. There is nothing better about 1.6 and the hitboxes in Source are easily better. And this guy is saying Source is too hard, yet you are telling him to go play with the psuedo "ubar 1337 vets"?

I am saying it isnt too hard. Source is not better ... the headshot hitbox is malproportional to the rest of the body, there are plenty of bugs, MANY more than in 1.6, the people look like idiots when they run with guns ... the shields ordeal ... well lets see theres this nice scripting module that most servers use called amxx, if you dont want shields u turn them off its that simple ... too bad you cant fix insane M4 spray in source ... or the fact that the head hitbox is almost double the size of any other limb on the body, INCLUDING LEGS, besides the torso ...

heres a nice long buglist of Source ... they are big bugs too not little insignificant ones :P have fun disproving me

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=563372

a shorter list

-Net Code
Moving players have a reaction advantage to sticked players (yes, its TRUE): Read this

-Body shield
If you shoot at a playermodel, only the part of the model that is hit first takes damage. If you shoot an ennemy straight into his head - but the hand blocks the sight to it, he only takes low damage - he should be dead with one headshot from this straight distance with an m4a1 (he has no helmet). Also, the shaking of his view doesn`t happen - the shot only registered as a hand-hit by the server - but the client thinks i also hit the head (there is
blood in his face!).

-Seeing shadows and guns through walls.

-Flashes
The problem with flashes sometimes is when you throw it right next to someone, in front of them and they get no flash.
Or another flash canceling the last one which unblind you while 1 second.

-Shoot through fire extinguisher+wall = full damage
If you shoot through a fire extinguisher, which is in front of a stone-wall,
the damage behave like there would be no wall and no fire extinguisher you are
shooting through.

Get skill if you can't deal with the M4. And head hitboxes are fine, quit your whining. The hitboxes in 1.6 are much more whack (they lag or bullets don't register). I used to be a veteran CS player but Source is just more fun.

actually a decent server doesnt lag any more than a source server, a server with a proper setup has registration to a far greater accuracy than the source engine, sources map makers are terrible, who cares if the game looks better if every texture is recycled and or the maps are bland looking. Im done argueing, defending CS:S is rediculous. I'm waiting for www.cspromod.com, its 1.6 on the source engine and its the first group on steam community to pass the 10k+ member mark, it has the praise of most top CS and CSS pro players and well its gonna kill source off dead and hopefully pull most people from 1.6 as well and put the entire community back on one game instead of splitting it up amonst CS CSS and CZ ...

I was expecting to be called a "n00b" im not denying it, I am a n00b, but my problem is it's just so darn frustrating for people like me who are just starting out, other games you atleast pick up on rather quickly and start to become decent, but it seems like if you didn't jump on the bandwaggon with this game years ago you get screwed every time you play.

Fire in bursts and walk around aiming a little high. I really blow at CSS but I have a friend who is just like the people you described. Those are two things he told me to do. There were a bunch of other things but those are the only ones I remember.

dude you are playing against guys who have been playing the game since it was a mod for the original half life.
sure it has better graphics, etc but the game mechanics are the same.
plain and simple...practice makes perfect...
so start now and a lot of bruises is to be expected.

when ur playing and your finding it too hard dont try the alternative: hacking. so you shoudnt think of hacking if you find it hard as you will get better, and you will get banned as if you got a hacker in the server he will eventually get banned in 3 days or so, dont morry "noob":P

try getting into using the weapons you like, just slowly play bots, then go onto a laid back 20 person office game

try out all the possibilities, except hacking

CSS, out of any game, in my opinion, takes the most experience to be decent at. It takes the most skill. A lot of people think they're good, but neve really played up against competitive teams or players. You have to realize that a lot of the "skilled" CS players have been playing 4+ years.

I found both games are rather simply FPS (No Iron Sight, No Tactical Movement)... they both lack depth compared to most FPS. That doesn't mean it isn't fun. I play CS:S at least 2 hours a week because the physics and its fun to see someone fly back after hitting him in the face with a 12gauge. Personally, I'm hoping crysis will revive the FPS genre... cause I find it pathetic that CS:S and CS 1.6 are the most popular FPS games.

A couple of things to remember when starting a new FPS game is...

  • Never expect to be amazing on the first try, most people need a few hours of gameplay before they get good at an online FPS. Usually because its just a new setting/system to what they may be used to from before with other FPS games. Best thing you can do with online gaming, especially CSS, is throw yourself into "the deep end" and don't shy away from getting yourself fragged constantly. Doing this forces you to learn and think quickly about the game and eventually you'll pick up the basics to allow you to get some frags.
  • CSS is full of veteran players who have been playing it since day one and continued to play it ever since. Some people have just got the skill and experience that it takes to be outright amazing at the game. I myself used to be pretty damn good at it but if i were to login to CSS now, id get my arse handed to me. Usually the "pro" players take the game serious and participate in multiple tournaments and clan matches aswell as having regular training sessions with their clan throughout the week. The clan i used to belong too had a regular training session from 5pm to 8pm (UK GMT time) and everyone was expected to attend it and play for the three hours. You had to give a pretty damn good excuse in advance as to why you couldn't/didn't attend, thats just how serious they took it. You may also notice that many of the good players are older more mature men and women and usually most clans have an age limit for recruits, this is usually 18+ and has to be proved by using voice chat on teamspeak etc.
  • However not all players on CSS are honest good gamers, like most online FPS games, CSS does suffer from a large hacking community. These people usually hack for a few reasons, the first being they wan't to be as good as the more skilled and experienced players but not sacrafice the time it takes to reach that level of skill, basically they are lazy. Some use hacks because they refuse to believe there are players out there that are genuinely just that good. These people often use that excuse because they swear on their life everyone else hacks so they must also hack aswell. Usually these people forget they have the option to swap servers and experience actual CSS gamers in action NOT using hacks. Half the time these people are easy to notice hacking because they download a program that they have no idea how to use effectively. They don't play with the configuration to make the hack less subtle. Eg - crosshair snapping directly to an enemy players head who was standing behind the hacker. If this happens then the hacker hasn't changed his ESP-FOV from 360 to 90, also they have their aimbot on automatic, targetted at the head hitbox. This is the definition of online stupidity, any experienced admin or player will instantly notice this and report them to the server, STEAM bans list and VAC support itself. Bottom line with hackers, if your going to hack (and people will always do so until a 100% anti-hack feature is released) atleast do it well if not just stop playing the game.

I think thats most of what you need to know really, others who have posted here have explained the CSS game mechanics and bugs in the engine so i wont repeat it. But i do suggest you go to the STEAM support page and look under the VAC forums and read some of the topics started by people who have had a STEAM account banned. It really goes to show that you may hack on CSS, but VAC will eventually catch you out since most hacks get old and become detectable until people upgrade them. But like all hacks there is NEVER a 100% guarantee the hack is VAC/Anti-Cheat proof!

It seems as if CSS players are a bit more hard-core in general then players in other similar games (like CoD2 for instance). Also, as others have said, some servers are more hard-core then others. I would play on the [SIG] servers. Most of them are a bit more laid back, and are easier to play on. I was playing on they're GunGame servers for a LONG time, and got good. Eventually i got bored of GunGame and went back to regular counterstrike on other servers. There definately was a big difference in skill level.
