Well you might as well get the Orange Box since its a great deal.. comes with Half Life 2, Espidode 1, TF2 AND Portal.
I bought HL2 on release which came with CS:Source and i still play CS:Source.. i've been playing CS since it was in Beta 3. Its one game that even though you stop playing for a while, you'll always come back to.
CSS owns. I stopped playing TF2 and COD4 to go back to Source, its just a way better online game. TF2 was awesome, much better than COD4, but I got bored of the style after a few months.SKaREO
if u talk about css then cs 1.6 is much better than css also got a bigger comu but i still think cod4 is better than cs and team fortress

I played CS since Beta 6.1, and after 8 years of the same game, you're really looking something new. COD4 might be a ton of fun for some people, but in my opinion, its multiplayer component is poorly balanced for competition.
- Counter Strike Source Cons: Terribly uptight community that berates you for being a noob and berates you for being an expert. As well as many server admins that if you kill them too much they will boot you. As well as many instances where players will not work as a team and just go lone wolf to try to win it for themselves.

I found these cons much more often in COD4 games compared to CS. Its true that n00bs get pwned hard in CS, but as for lonewolf strategy or terrible admins, COD4 wins hands down.

Team Fortress 2:
Pros:
The diverse and well balanced classes effectively mean there's nine games in one. How you play is determined by what you play. No two classes play the same.
The game is a simple pleasure to look at. The visual style is fantastic, there's a great sense of unique character to the game - and all of the classes have great animations and soundbytes.
The strong focus on the team over the individual usually means that you will be doing well if your team is doing well, while if your team is doing badly, you will also likely not be faring so well. This means that bad players on good teams can actually achieve things and have a lot of fun in the game.
The strong focus on the team also means that you have to work closely with your teammates - attacking a well defended point may well take the collaboration of nine or ten players, all orchestrating a choreographed, precision attack with each class performing a specific role which works in tandem with what others are doing. It's not all about shooting at enemies until they die.
The official maps are all awesome.
The game does not punish you excessively for dying (the longest you will have to wait is about 17 seconds).
The game ranks players on the table through points rather than kills. It factors in kills, kill assists (if someone else helps someone kill someone else, they get half a point for the kill assist, rather than rewarding the kill squarely to whoever makes the kill), and many other, class specific elements.
If you get killed by the same person a few times, the game announces that you are dominating them, and you then display as a nemesis for them. It's fun to dominate someone, but scoring the revenge kill while being dominated (which clears the domination) is equally satisfying, and it seems to alleviate any frustration you may have felt at dying to the same person over and over.
All round very, very polished game. It spent ten years in development almost, and it shows.
Pro/con:
It's not a twitch game. You don't need to be able to score a headshot at 500 yards to be good at the game. Many of the classes require only moderate levels of accuracy, and some require none. But this just serves to shift focus from the individual to the team.
Cons:
No bots for singleplayering.
Besides that, I see no clear cons specific to TF2. It has flaws, but these are mostly inherent flaws with all multiplayer FPS games.
I haven't played CS:S in years, so I won't comment on it.
CSS absolutley! no question! get it now!
i promise you that youll get bored of TF2 soon, it is not as addictive and rewarding as CSS
and in TF2 has classes which completley ruins the game cause it "forces" you to do exactly what that class should do

While it forces you to adopt a particular style for the class you're playing, it doesn't force you to pick any particular class - which makes your point pretty much moot. It's only forced when you don't have a choice, which you do.
It's the equivalent of selecting your weapon in Counter-Strike. If you want to snipe, you buy a sniper rifle, if you want to assault, you buy a shotgun or a rifle... only the clearly defined and diverse class roles in TF2 gives the game much more variety.
And if you don't like what you're doing, you just change class.
CSS if you want accuracy and skill, and a challange.
TF2 if you like the whole Capture the flag and control points stuff. No twitch/skill required.
I Vote Team Fortress 2
Buy it in the orange box package if you can as stated by some of the other guys.
Both Team Fortress 2 and CS:Source are about as realistic as each other....
(And TF2 makes absolutely no claim on reality) that tells you about how dated CS:Source is. Real Weapons, very poor damage and ballistic modelling. Whereas TF2 is just a hoot from start to finish with a lot of funny moments without the (Bull%$* as if I put half a clip in that guy and he still shot me with a 9mm from across the map) moments.
I won't mention a point blank panic spray that hits absolutely nothing...
Team Fortress 2 FTW.
I have played both, and I enjoy TF2 much more.
The CS:S community is horrific, one of the worst I've ever experienced. People are rude, ignorant, childish, and dont' like to be team players.
TF2 on the other hand, has one of the best communities. Many of the players are mature and co-operative.
As stated above, CS:S is more based around twitch shooting, and TF2 is not. I have also found TF2 to be much more tactical than CS:S. It usually requires people to work togethor, in order to take various objectives.
Even though tf2 hasn't been around for that long, there are already a handful of quality user-made maps.
THE BOTTOME LINE
If you want a game that is based around twitch shooting and practice, go for counter strike.
IF you want a game that is balanced, has intense action, and rewards strategising, go for TF2.
cheers

Dont judge the community on its pubs. CSS is none of those things if you get into a team and play for a reason other than wasting time.
Damn!.. what a topic created!! even i wanted to decide between these 2 games. but now i am in big confusion to decide which one to buy? so many mixed comments. hard to decide. i've played cs 1.6, i'loved it and i left it 1 yr before. suggest me which one to buy please..
If you like FPS online games then these two are MUST OWNS games imo.
What is better? Well I would give Team Fortress2 a 10/10, while Counterstrike Source I would give a 9/10.
Both are worth getting though imo!
Ive played close to 400 hours of TF2 (pc beta, pc version and 360 version), and it never gets boring.
Depends on what type of experience you want. TF2 and CS are two very different games.
If your into very serious gaming and you like a game that takes a huge amount of aiming skill CS is your game. However be prepared for the massive learning curve and the rather bitter community.
TF2 has an incredibly friendly community on the other hand and is doesn't take nearly as much skill (although there is a competitive level). Teamwork is also much more essential to your personal success. Art style also throws some people off.
Once again it's up to what you want in an FPS.
You really can't go wrong with CSS. It's like the back up game when every other game has failed. TF2 is a blast, but compared to CS, I don't believe it has the a lasting effect as long as CS. But seeing as how both games can be played for a very, very, very long time, that's saying something.
With CS though, you either have the pros who are very intolerant and can sometimes ruin the fun of the game, or the stereotypical idiots we all like to make fun of whenever "CS" is brought up. TF2 does have players who try to be better than everyone else, but in general it's easier to find a "better" game in TF2 than CS:S on average, I think.
