CAn I still get CS for free. The old CS not that Source version. I don't know where to begin though, are there still even active players? Do you have to download extra patches or what??? Plz anyone who still plays CS 1.6 or older version help me with this.

Well by free you mean if you own Half-Life the original? If so yes you can, just go to steampowered.com, Steam replaced Half-Life's multiplayer component.  Once you setup steam you can easily download the original counter-strike.

Wasn't CS released as a free download at first? Then they added extra patches and put in steam.... can I still download the original CS and play it on steam or do I have to purchase a copy for the CD key? Oh and are there still plenty of players on?

It was free back years ago when Steam was in its beta testing stages.  You have to own Half-Life/CD Key in order to play CS.  Theres almost the same if not more people playing the original CS than CS:S, so yeah theres a lot of people still playing.
