Has vista gotten any better with gaming? I heard SP1 was good for it, Also my friend says he has no problems with vista

I am looking at getting vista 64bit and got a few questions before anything happens

1) has it gotten better?
2) will i have any problems with software not working with the 64bit version
3) will 6GB of ram with vista actually work for gaming / multi-tasking with PC

just incase you guys need to know my specs

C2D 6600 @ 2.4
2GB ram (planning on making it 6GB if I get vista)
8800 GTS

thanks in advance

1) has it gotten better? Yes, performance increased significantly with SP1
2) will i have any problems with software not working with the 64bit version Some drivers may conflist, but you can always google for help if you ahve trouble
3) will 6GB of ram with vista actually work for gaming / multi-tasking with PC yes but 6gb is overkill, shoot for about 4

Nice I have a very similar set to you:

Q6600

6GB DDR2 Ram

8600GTS

Anyways, yes it is worth it to go with x64. I have it and it works fine and it has some additional feature that the 32- bit does not have.

6gb RAM is over kill. If you want 64-bit, 4gb is enough. 32-bit needs 2gb. Yes, it's on par with XP for games, runs everything fine. Only game I can't get on Vista is Rome Total War.

4gb on 32bit is more useful than 4gb on 64bit. 6gb overkill? Never.

I finally took the leap and upgraded to vista 3-4 months ago. Overall I found it to be a bit of an anticlimax.. I really didnt see all that much ofa diffrence either way.

The good news:

  1. I havent had any game give me trouble (recently played through STALKER without any issues).
  2. As an OS it seems stable, boots faster than my old XP installation and generally works well

The bad news

  1. It's a hassle to format, reinstall, drivers etc. No worse than doing the same on XP though.
  2. They moved a lot of the buttons around :o I'm still finding myself looking for a few of the old XP features
  3. To be honest.. I didnt see enough of a diffrence either way. In hindsight I wouldnt have bothered upgrading.

I play Stalker just fine on my Vista machine, make sure you get all the patches. My buddy has and plays The Witcher just fine on Vitsa

I also play Rome: Total war just fine on Vista.

While I have had small problems with my Vista machine, I have had many more with my XP rig, but I attribute most of those to the Nvidia chipset.
