The rig is this:

Processor: Intel Core2 duo 6400 at 2.13 Ghz (oldest thing on his rig along with his Mobo which is ASUS, manufactured sometime in late 2006)

Power Supply: 750 watt (dont know the brand but he says its the newest thing on his rig and that its pretty good. He just replaced his old one a few months ago)

Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce gts 250 1gb

HDD: 7200 rpm 750gb internal

sound card: Audigy sound blaster 5.1 capable

RAM: 6 GB DDR2 Kingston (cant believe i forgot this)

He is also throwing in a decent mouse and keyboard, no monitor is included in the price.

Tell me if you think this rig is worth it or if you need more information. I plan to wipe his OS which is currently XP and install windows 7. Which drivers am i likely to have trouble with in the process? Thanks in advance.

If you can get Win7 cheap, yes. Just try to upgrade the processor. How much memory does it have?

I will try to talk him down. Honestly the convienience of dropping 400$ for an already built computer that i know can run the games i play is a factor as well. I was looking into building one but im not sure i could do much better for the price.

for 450-500.. no you cant really about the only thing better would be the cpu and even then you would lose the ram.. and probably any fixings it comes with (mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers (if any of these apply)

offer him $350 maybe $400 not worth $500 when you consider it has a slow cpu and outdated socket.

to put it into perspective Athlon 2 x2 3.2ghz $76 Radeon 5770 $180 4gb ram $120 motherboard from $65 powersupply $70 1.5tb hdd $90 So $100 more for a much better system, you could trim $100 off by putting in a slower gpu that is much closer to the one he has.

I never said it was the cheapest, why would you go am2 when new cpus use am3? am3 supports 6 core cpus 775 don't.

really doesn't matter if you're not getting that cpu, anyway. a reason to get a Pentium dual core is 'cause of the power consumption. seems only I care about that though :P (note: I am NOT recommending the lga 775 socket here)

I can understand being a fanboy if your going for the top end product of that companys line, eg. the i7/i5, but if you are on a budget, which you are, you should just look for best price per performance and most upgradable which is definitely the AM3 route.

this, and you may have to spend more on upgrading the cpu, which if it is a 775 socket then you should still be able to get a powerful cpu to put into it without having to even change the mobo. (core 2 quads are still a great processor)

Im thinking I would be ok with AMD chip and card but I want a mobo thats going to last me for a while without requiring and upgrade for processor and card upgrades. Will this one work for that?

This, a new computer at $500 can be made with similar or better parts, and an up to date OS. Also your friends computer is running a dead socket type, so your upgrade options would be limited in the future.

Fair price. That'll play most modern games on high settings. Upgrade the CPU and you'll have a stellar rig, even for a 775 socket.

Thats a pretty bad deal. I built my own rig for 100 bucks less and it has ddr 3 and has an actual upgrade path.

Like everyone said, you need to talk him down much lower; if you ever want to upgrade in the future because of the dead 775 socket you will need a new motherboard, cpu, and memory. Also, that GPU is pretty dirt cheap nowadays, it is good, don't get me wrong, but you can get a 5770 for a similar build price.

Anyone build me something better for the same price (dont mind if it includes AMD parts, also it can be slightly more expensive, like 550$). I want a rig that is upgradeable and lacking the glass cieling that the one he is offering certainly has. I can get windows 7 64 bit for dirt cheap with my student email. This would be much appreciated. And also everyone here has already been a big help :)

if cost is an issue for you intel is not going to give you something very good on the low end, but Amd has great budget cpus. If you must have intel you might as well go with that computer you'll struggle to get anything intel that is much better for that price.

This looks good to me, and I will be able to upgrade due to the AM3 socket correct? Also, what would this rig be capable of running? All of the games currently out on decent setting? Any thoughts on this rig?

I did some peeking and I found a case I think id rather have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 (id have to splurge a bit but a case is something id be willing to do that with because im a sucker for aesthetics and parenthesis.)
