cpu compatibility question

are all cpus compatible with all motherboards? what do sockets mean?

not all CPu work on the same socket: pentium 4 uses an 478-pin socket while the core 2 duo uses LGA-775 socket. Btw having for example an LGA-775 on your motherboard does not mean that every CPu with an LGA-775 socket can work. Take a look at the Core 2 Extreme Families, althoughthey are LGA-775, they cannot work on DP35DP which has an LGA-775 Socket.

yea i know but i chose intel because it is easier to comprehend it :P
