i am planning to buy this graphics card when it is released in HOng Kong in around the end of July

Herez a link: http://galaxytech.com/product_details.asp?id=192

its a low profile ready 9600gt for HTPC users.

The thing is - i have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Dual Core processor that runs at a stock clock of 1.9 GHz. Because my computer is OEM (DELL *sigh) i cannot overclcok from BIOS. however, i managed to overclcok to 2.1 GHz VIA on-windows software.

Will this 2.1 GHz bottleneck? if so - what is a recomended clock speed for the 9600gt (at reference speed - not planning to overclock)

if the 9600gt is not suitable - what about the 8600gt. will the CPU at stock speed bottleneck the 8600gt?

here is the one i was looking into

here is the one i was looking into (cannot post link because of a forbidden .html error)

http://www.google.com/search?q=geforce+8600gt+slim+version&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a (First result)

It is again a low profile graphics card - 8600gt 256mb GDDR3

i really prefer the 9600gt - getting higher framerates in source engine and possibly even running crysis --

thanks in advance for all your advice and suggestions.:)

You should do fine with the 9600 GT. The "bottleneck" most likely will be very small, if noticable.

Have you used AMD Overdrive?

There will be quite a notable bottleneck with that 9600GT and X2 3600. You should try to get the X2 to at least 2.80GHz or 2.60GHz. But it depends on the game, obviously. If you're trying to run a CPU intensive game like Crysis or a RTS game, you'll experience some dissapointment.

If you're talking about gaming performance your bottleneck will usually be from your video card once you get to about 2 gigs on your processor. Most current games are very graphics intensive so they benefit more from a good video card rather than a fast processor. If you running a lot of multimedia apps other than games then a fast processor would be better than a high end graphics card.

you cpu will defintly bottleneck a 9600gt in some games, but it will still be much faster than a 8600gt, so i'd still go with the 9600gt as they are really cheap and 3600x2 with 9600gt will destroy the 8600gt

But you still need a decent cpu up to an extent. I think the cpu wouldn't bottle neck it too much.

Go for the 9600gt, do not even consider the 8600gt.

The bottleneck should be minimal.

Why worry about a bottleneck? It's nothing to worry about, especially since the PC is for HTPC use.

It's nice to see someone make a high end video card in half height form. Nice for all of the slim towers and desktop PC cases that won't allow a full height card.

I hope it actually comes out and I hope it's reasonably priced. It will work great with your other components.
